Browser Settings Guide

As an online system, Blackboard Learn relies heavily on the technology within your browser to function properly. Blackboard requires that browsers have JavaScript, Cookies, and Pop-Up Windows enabled to work properly. To make sure your browser is set-up correctly, follow the directions below to enable JavaScript, Cookies and Pop-Up Windows. New browsers and browser version are changing rapidly, so if you the directions do not match what is on your screen contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.

These instructions are for PC and Mac computers.

To enable Cookies, JavaScript, and Pop-Ups:
  1. Click on the Wrench icon and then select Settings. (For Macs, select Chrome>Preferences in the program menu.)
  2. Click Show advanced settings at the bottom of the page.
  3. Scroll down to Privacy and click Content Settings.
  4. Under the Cookies heading, select Allow local data to be set.
  5. Under the JavaScript heading, select Allow all sites to run JavaScript.
  6. Under the Pop-ups heading, select Do not allow any site to show pop-ups.
  7. Under the Pop-ups heading, click the Manage exceptions button.
  8. In the box Add a new hostname patter, enter *.blackboard.valpo.edu and make sure Allow is set under Behavior.
  9. Click OK to save the Pop-up exception and then click OK to save all the settings.

These instructions are for PC and Mac computers.

To enable Cookies, JavaScript, and Pop-Ups:
  1. Select Tools on the program menu and then select Options. (For Macs, select Firefox>Preferences in the program menu.)
  2. Select the Privacy icon and check the Accept cookies from sites box.
  3. Select the Content icon.
  4. Check the Enable JavaScript box.
  5. Check the Block Pop-up Windows box.
  6. Click the Exceptions button next to Block Pop-up Windows.
  7. In the box enter *.blackboard.valpo.edu and make sure it is set to Allow.
  8. Click Close to save all the settings.
To enable Cookies:
  1. Click on the Tools in the program menu and then select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Privacy tab and click the Advanced button.
  3. Check the Override Automatic Cookie Handling option.
  4. Make sure the setting for First Party is set to Accept and that the setting for Third Party is set to Prompt.
  5. Check the option to Always allow session cookies.
  6. Click OK to save the changes.
To enable JavaScript:
  1. Click on the Tools in the program menu and then select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab and click the Custom Level button.
  3. Scroll down to Scripting.
  4. Make sure Allow Scripting, Allow Programmatic Clipboard Access, Allow Status Bar Updates Via Script, and Allow Websites to Prompt For Information Using Scripted Windows are all set to Enabled.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.
To enable Pop-Ups:
  1. Click on the Tools in the program menu and then select Pop-up Blocker.
  2. Click the Pop-up Blocker Settings.
  3. Type in *.blackboard.valpo.edu and click the Add button.
  4. Click Close to save the changes.

These instructions are for Mac computers. Safari for PC is not supported by Blackboard.

To enable Cookies, JavaScript, and Pop-Ups:
  1. Select Safari>Preferences in the program menu.
  2. Click the Security icon.
  3. Check the box for JavaScript.
  4. Uncheck the box for Block Pop-up Windows.
  5. Under Accept Cookies, select Only From Sites Your Navigate To.
  6. Click Close to save all the settings.
