Committed to Academic Excellence

Students in mathematics and statistics at Valparaiso University benefit from a faculty of distinguished scholars who are eager to share their enthusiasm for the discipline. A strong commitment to effective teaching and an approachable faculty create a collegial, friendly environment for learning.

Mathematics can be pursued as an end in itself, but it is also a powerful tool for understanding the world and plays a key role in a wide range of disciplines. Valpo’s math and statistics department encourages its students to combine their study of mathematics with other intellectual interests by offering several flexible major and minor programs that can be tailored to meet students’ needs.

Valpo math majors are active participants in their education. Students engage in co-curricular activities, including professional conferences, service projects, and competitions, throughout their Valpo careers.

Students have the opportunity to engage in research projects from their first semester at Valpo. A well-established undergraduate research program regularly leads to conference presentations and potential for publication.

Through the mathematics colloquium and other opportunities to develop presentation skills, Valpo math students learn to communicate complex concepts — a valuable skill in almost any field.
