2021 CONHP Award Recipients

Congratulations to all of our 2021 graduates!

JANET M. BROWN AWARD
2021 Recipient: Rebecca Peterson
This award was established in 2017 in honor Dr. Janet Brown, who served as dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions when the doctoral program was founded. This award recognizes a doctoral nursing student who demonstrates commitment to excellence, leadership and significant growth in scholarship, and recognizes the importance of serving the profession. The recipient of this award is selected by DNP faculty.

FREDA S. SCALES AWARD
2021 Recipient: Roshni Yadav
The Freda S. Scales award was established in 2000 in honor of Dr. Scales, who served as the dean when the graduate program was founded.  The award is presented to the MSN graduate who presents bold thinking and a willingness to embrace new and innovative approaches to nursing education.  The recipient is selected by faculty.

HEALTH ADMINISTRATION AWARD
2021 Recipient: Nicole Novak
The Health Administration Award was established in 2019, and is presented to a graduating Master of Health Administration student who demonstrates enthusiasm, energy, and excellence in their commitment to impacting and advancing healthcare through leadership, as demonstrated by fostering support for undergraduate Healthcare Leadership students, community projects, or service learning.

MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH AWARD
2021 Recipient: Brandon LaChapelle
The Master of Public Health Award has been newly established in 2021 and is presented to a graduating Master of Public Health student who demonstrates the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors in preventing disease while promoting and protecting the health of populations through their graduate studies and their commitment to serving others to improve health justice.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT AWARD
2021 Recipient: TBA
The Physician Assistant Award was established in 2020, and is presented to a graduating student in the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program who always acts with integrity, demonstrates excellent teamwork and collaboration, and exemplifies a compassionate, service-oriented approach to patient care.

GERTRUDE BLUEMEL AWARD
2021 Recipient: Sarah Caesar
The Gertrude Bluemel Award was established in 1987 in honor of a former nursing faculty member, and is presented to a graduating nursing senior who demonstrates determination, perseverance, a sense of humor, a desire to elevate the standards of nursing, recognition of the importance of the role of the nurse in prevention of illness, and a concern for human worth and dignity regardless of race, creed, or culture.

CARLENE BARTELT AWARD
2021 Recipients: Rylee Cookerly, Alison Hamilton, Rachel Hewitt, Madeline Jones, Keegan Maris, Cecelia Frankewich, Justin McClain, Madison McKibben, Paige Mecyssine, Michaela Ronk, Jenna Thomas, Emily Thomason, Emily Valente, Peyton Westcott, and Brooke Wold
The Carlene Bartelt Award was established in 2004 in honor of a former nursing faculty member, and is presented to CONHP seniors who are graduating with a 3.8 grade point average and have been in attendance at Valparaiso University at least two years (a minimum of 60 credit hours).

DOROTHY PAULSEN SMITH AWARD
2021 Recipients: Caroline Perrot & Isabella Portugal
The Dorothy Paulsen Smith Award was established in 1987 in honor of the College’s first dean, and is presented to a graduating nursing senior whose quest for excellence has reflected the spirit of the College of Nursing and Health Professions.  Criteria include demonstrated scholarship and leadership, openness and enthusiasm, energy and creativity, and empathy and compassion.

DAISY NURSING FACULTY AWARD
2021 Recipient: Dr. Lynette Rayman
The Daisy Nursing Faculty award recognizes faculty whose expertise and excellence are demonstrated in their role as teachers of nursing students.  The recipient exhibits care and compassion, facilitates learning in the clinical setting, provides an environment where students can freely express ideas, and displays a personal interest in student learning. The recipient is selected by students.
