Assistant Professor of Nursing

Professor Bleza joined the faculty in 2009 and teaches in the undergraduate program. Her extensive clinical experience in critical care environments includes medical, surgical and neuro intensive care; open heart recovery; trauma and emergency care. Prior to teaching at Valpo, she worked as a staff, charge, and clinical nurse educator in emergency and critical care. Her scholarly interests include healthcare simulation and critical thinking. Professor Bleza’s current work in simulation involves scenario development, implementation, debriefing and faculty development. A recent project was the development and implementation of a multiple patient, capstone simulation for graduating seniors. Other recent projects include faculty development presentations on debriefing and incorporation of the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: SimulationSM. Professor Bleza participated in and completed the first cohort of the INACSL-CAE Healthcare Simulation Fellowship and is finalizing a faculty development tool using video vignettes of simulation scenarios, along with five members of the cohort to facilitate skills in simulation pedagogy. In addition, Professor Bleza co-authored a focused literature review of simultaneous, multiple patient simulations in undergraduate nursing education (Blodgett, Blodgett & Bleza, 2016) and was a reviewer of the recently updated INACSL Standards of Best Practice (2016). Professor Bleza has also completed the National League for Nursing’s Simulation Leaders program, focusing on facilitating excellence in simulation education. She received the University Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award in 2016, and the Graduate Faculty Excellence Award as a graduate student in 2009.
