Biography

Dr. Carroll joined the College of Nursing and Health Professions faculty in 2022 and teaches in the Occupational Therapy Department. She earned her OTD from Washington University in St. Louis in 2008. Theresa’s clinical occupational therapy practice experience includes working with children and youth in schools, community, early intervention, and outpatient clinic environments. She has experience working with children and youth with autism and other developmental disabilities. Her scholarly work has focused on best practices for supporting youth transition to adulthood, self-determination, and leadership in school based practice. Dr. Carroll has also worked with a number of community organizations as an Occupational Therapy Consultant, collaborating with organizations to identify needs and develop effective programming.

Dr. Carroll is an active member of American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and currently serves as a co-facilitator for the AOTA Transition Community of Practice. Dr. Carroll co-founded a Community of Practice for Early Intervention and School based practitioners in Illinois, and has experience establishing and facilitating other Communities of Practice to support learning and networking among occupational therapy practitioners.

Dr. Carroll has presented at a number of professional conferences including the American Occupational Therapy Association Annual Conference, AOTA Education Summit, AOTA Children and Youth Conference, Illinois Occupational Therapy Association Conference, and the World Federation of Occupational Therapy Conference. She has published articles in The Journal of Occupational Therapy in Schools and Early Intervention, The Journal of Occupational Therapy in Healthcare, and Occupational Therapy Practice. Dr. Carroll has also co-authored the chapters in pediatric textbooks for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants.
