Dear Valparaiso University Law School Class of 2020,

As we continue to navigate the ever-changing terrain in the midst of a global pandemic, University leaders are taking a measured and thoughtful approach to every decision regarding our COVID-19 response. We have been carefully listening to the feedback of University constituents to help us forge a path through this time of uncertainty.

While all of us have been looking forward to celebrating your successes as the Law School Class of 2020 during our May Commencement, the University is committed first and foremost to hosting a safe and healthy ceremony. At this time, we have decided to postpone Commencement until this commitment can be honored. Once a determination on timing has been made, we will share that information with you. I can promise you that Valparaiso University will hold a Commencement ceremony for the Law School’s Class of 2020.

This is not how any of us expected to conduct the spring 2020 semester, and I am sure the feelings of disruption caused by this unprecedented pandemic must be particularly acute for you as Valparaiso University’s final class of Law School graduates. Yet, while it is both necessary and appropriate to acknowledge the deep sadness we all feel, it is also important to remember and celebrate all you have accomplished. The memories you formed as Valparaiso Law students will endure.

You have exemplified the Valparaiso Law School values and core ethos of leadership and service during an extraordinary time. I am so proud of all of your accomplishments, in the classroom, through pro bono service, and with extra-curricular activities like the Student Bar Association.

I will continue to update you as the details and our pathway forward become clearer. May God bless each of you in your final weeks of studies and in the work you are doing to live out your calling to the law.
