Kevin Steele: Student Success Strategies for Remote Delivery

Dear Students, 

The faculty have been busy converting your classes over to an online format. Many attended workshop sessions to get started on this endeavor over their spring break. Please be patient in this time of transition as new procedures, technologies, and teaching methods are being transitioned in a very short period of time. Your instructors will be in contact with you soon, if they have not been already.  

What can you do to insure your success in this course and your other courses in an online environment? I have pulled some strategies for success together below: 

Be sure you have access to a reliable, strong internet connection and you can access the following tools: 
Do Not Procrastinate!
  • Get started early on assignments and work them in smaller chunks at a time.
  • Questions on assignments will require more wait time since we are communicating via email.  
Set a schedule for yourself and follow it!
  • Disciplining yourself to follow your work schedule is the most critical thing you can do to insure your own success.  
  • Block out the time as if you were still in class.  
  • Treat your course like a job. Show up on time to your study periods, class meetings and project time in your schedule.
  • It is easy to fall behind since you are not present in class. This is one of your greatest challenges for remote delivery. 
Eliminate distractions
  • Leave your cell phone in another room
  • Limit social media time
  • Backup your work! The university has access to Google Drive and you are encouraged to use it.  
    • You can also install google drive on your machine so you can access your files just like you do with files on the machine hard drive itself.  
    • Files will remain on your hard drive and automatically sync to the Google cloud.
Check your courses on Blackboard at least once a day. Not all updates will be sent via email.
  • DISCUSSION BOARD TIP: Discussion boards will be used more frequently. Compose initial posts in a word processing document and paste them into the discussion response area. Blackboard times out after a period of time and your submission may be lost if you are timed-out before pressing submit. 
  • Online discussion boards, sync sessions, among others, will require participating to engage in course content for both you and your colleagues. 
Ask for help when needed and take advantage of online office hours.
  • Please contact them for methods of scheduling and how assistance will be provided during this time. 
  • Online office hours will be available and your instructor will let you know how to schedule and connect.

Academic support services (Tutoring, Writing Center, AARC, Counseling Center, etc.) will still be open and available in an online format. Learning center directors are in the process of devising contingency plans and communicating instructions to student employees and students. The plans will establish new practices to switch in-person services to online services. At this time, all in-person services are temporarily suspended until in-person courses resume on campus. For more information, check for the most recent updates on each learning center’s website.

Center directors and staff remain fully committed to supporting students and connecting them with resources and assistance during this period of transition to distance learning.
