COO David Phelps: Emergency Grant Funds Available for Students

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well. We continue to think of you and miss seeing you on campus.
I write to you today to provide an update on two matters: 1) questions related to room, board, and parking charges subsequent to Governor Holcomb’s stay-at-home order in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; and 2) emergency grant funds for students who have encountered COVID-19-related financial difficulties.
Room, Board, and Parking
You will recall that, as a result of the Governor’s order, the University gave notice that, except for students with a special exemption, students were required to move out of the University residence halls no later than 8 p.m. on March 24. Students have raised questions as to how the University might respond to residential students who no longer have access to residence halls and dining. The University is committed to addressing student concerns about spring 2020 charges for room, board, and parking for those who left campus as a result of the Governor’s order. We ask for your continued patience as we process all available information and make a determination about how best to respond. The University has been working diligently to consider all of the resources available to students, employees, and the institution through the recent federal legislation such as the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) as well as responses from other entities. Unfortunately, this work takes time as we seek clarification on some of the information and how it could impact you and our community. The guidance from the government entities overseeing various stimulus initiatives is only now being released. We will communicate back with you once we have been able to gather guidance and have the information we need to make informed decisions.
We also wanted to share a new resource that has recently come available for students who are experiencing financial hardships related to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Emergency Grant Funds
A federal grant may be available to students who have encountered COVID-19 related financial difficulties. This could include, but is not limited to:
- a student’s loss of employment
- a loss of an off-campus job
- a parent’s loss of employment or reduction of hours
Grant amounts can range from $500–6000.
If you need assistance paying your spring semester student account balance or other educational related expenses, please complete this application.
Please note: The review committee will consider all applications received by May 1.
We will fund as many requests as possible until emergency funds are depleted. However, we cannot guarantee all requests can be fulfilled or funded in full. Applications received after May 1 will be reviewed if funds are still available.
