Dear Students, 

I’m writing to share updates with you on various topics: The CARES Act Grant; Grants for International Students; Room, Board, and Parking Credits; and to remind you of previously communicated information related to the Registration Threshold and the Federal Grants stemming from job losses.

Federal CARES Act Grants for Students

Valparaiso University was recently awarded Federal CARES Act stimulus funds that will be awarded directly to students. The University will award these grant funds to Title IV eligible students who were enrolled at the University on March 16, 2020. Due to the Title IV restriction, international students will not qualify for these grants. The University will not require students to apply for these funds; rather, these grants will be awarded as a direct payment to students. The grants are intended to be used by students to help defray costs incurred due to COVID-19 related impacts and can cover a variety of expenses including course materials, technology needs, food, housing, healthcare, and childcare. The grants will be awarded based on three primary factors including financial need as determined by the FAFSA, full- or part-time status, and undergraduate/graduate status. The grant awards will range from $200 to $900 based on these criteria. The grants will be transferred via direct deposit provided the University has banking information either already in our system or in the student payment portal; otherwise a check will be issued to the permanent address on file by May 15, 2020. University Grants for International Students

Students who are not Title IV eligible, which includes international students (documented and undocumented), but specifically those who are unable to travel to their home country this summer, may apply for grant assistance through the Office of International Programs. This is an application process and awards will be based on need and available funding. International students may apply for these grants here. Room, Board, and Parking Credits

The Student Accounts team is in the midst of calculating partial room, board, and parking permit credits (or refunds as described below) for residential students as a result of Governor Holcomb’s Stay-at-Home Order. Partial credits will also be calculated for commuter students who purchased meal plans and parking permits. The credits will be calculated using a factor of 35% applied against Spring 2020 charges for room, board, and parking less any institutional financial aid which previously covered these charges. There are many factors that go into these individual calculations and application to each student’s account, requiring work to be done on a case-by-case basis. We ask for your continued patience and understanding as we work through this process. Any credits issued will be posted to a student’s account in approximately 30–45 days. Students will be advised when the credits are posted to their accounts, and if the account is paid in full and displays a credit balance, students may request a refund using this link. Students who are returning in the fall may choose to apply credit balances to charges for the fall semester. Questions may be directed to student.accounts@valpo.edu.

Reminder: Registration Threshold Relaxed

As communicated to students via email on April 3, 2020, in order to facilitate registration for summer and fall classes, the University raised the registration balance threshold to $3,000. Students who have balances of $3,000 or less may register for both summer and fall 2020 courses now.

Reminder: Federal Grants Available

As communicated to students via email on April 10, 2020, a federal grant may be available to students who have encountered COVID-19 related financial difficulties and need assistance paying for spring semester student account balances or other educational related expenses. This could include, but is not limited to:

  • A student’s loss of an on-campus job
  • A student’s loss of an off-campus job
  • A parent’s loss of employment or reduction of hours

This is a limited-time opportunity and students must apply to receive this funding. Applications will be taken through May 1; grant amounts can range from $500 to $6,000.
