In this workshop, Dr. Lindsey will unpack the research on word recognition, teaching us to apply research-based reading strategies for single and multisyllabic words. These strategies are able to be incorporated into any literacy curriculum and are relevant for K-5 educators. The workshop content will be based on information from Dr. Lindsey’s book, Reading Above the Fray: Reliable, Research-Based Routines for Developing Decoding Skills.

Reading Above the Fray will be available for purchase at the workshop on November 2nd.

Why Science of Reading?

This workshop was planned as a response to the Indiana Department of Education’s vision and mission for literacy development and achievement.

“The Science of Reading describes research about “reading, reading development, and best practices for reading instruction” (Petscher et al., 2020). Researchers, particularly scientists who study the brain, have determined that carefully-ordered instruction in the essential components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension works best in reading instruction. The focus of Indiana’s Priorities for Early Literacy is to help educators better understand the Science of Reading to identify and implement effective instructional practices that can prevent reading difficulties and support literacy progress.”
-Indiana Department of Education

“The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) will collaborate with Indiana educators to
implement and apply the principles of the Science of Reading framework beginning in
early learning to increase student literacy achievement and develop graduates prepared
to succeed.”
-Indiana Department of Education
