Michelle Friesen-Carper is Director of Field Placement and a Lecturer in Education at Valparaiso University. Her responsibilities include organizing and managing student field work from first classroom observations through student teaching.
She brings a distinguished and varied record of successful teaching in both metropolitan and small-town settings: high school German language, fourth-grade classroom, middle school language arts and social studies. A graduate of the Indiana Writing Project, she served for several years as a workshop presenter on writing pedagogy for the Indiana Department of Education.
As Principal of Morgan Township Elementary, Michelle cultivated a focus on best-practice instruction, teaching thinking skills, and a devotion to the question “What’s best for kids?” Starting from a sub-60% ISTEP passing rate in 2001, Morgan achieved National Blue Ribbon School status in 2013.
