Guided Reading is a key component of a comprehensive, balanced literacy program that allows teachers to flexibly group students to meet individual needs. This workshop highlights using formative assessments to target a focus for each lesson, choosing texts that match the focus strategy, scaffolding students to independently monitor and problem-solve words, extending vocabulary and exploring deeper comprehension. After reading, the teacher leads students in rich discussions that lift student processing. SPEAKER’S BIO INFO:
Jan Richardson, Ph.D., a leading expert in guided reading, is a former K-12 teacher, reading specialist, Reading Recovery teacher leader, and staff developer. Jan has developed an Assess-Decide-Guide framework that provides precise and clear guidelines to support students at all stages of reading. She currently is an educational consultant, providing presentations and classroom demonstrations across the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Richardson’s best-selling Next Step Collection began with the publication of Next Step Guided Reading (Scholastic, 2009). The updated collection now includes The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading; The Guided Reading Teacher’s Companion: Prompts, Discussion Starters, and Teaching Points; Next Step Guided Reading in Action video suite; and Next Step Guided Reading Assessment co-authored with Maria P. Walther. Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention: RISE, co-authored with Ellen Lewis, will be published in the summer of 2018. With electrifying wit and wisdom, Jan leaves audiences informed, motivated, and inspired.
