Learn to read critically and communicate precisely in a community of scholars, writers, and deeply committed teachers.
The Valparaiso University English department offers a rich variety of approaches to the study of English language and literature, with undergraduate and master’s-level programs focusing on literary studies, writing, and teaching.
Our faculty are both highly regarded in their fields and focused on teaching. Our classes tend to be small and intimate, offering many opportunities for lively discussion. But conversation goes far beyond the classroom doors.
A full slate of events — including presentations by distinguished authors at Wordfest, book reviews and discussions at Books and Coffee, and live performances, workshops, and lectures and film as part of Valparaiso University’s annual Shakespeare Week— encourages students to investigate the power of the word to inspire, interrogate, and inform. The English department also produces two distinguished national (and international) literary journals, Valparaiso Poetry Review and Valparaiso Fiction Review, where many students have served as assistant editors. An award-winning student literary journal, The Lighter, enables students to share their own work, and the department often sponsors student travel to regional and national conferences of literary scholars.
