What beyond-the-classroom opportunities does Valpo offer in this field?

Area Resources:
Many of the courses in this major include off-campus field trips to places like Indiana Dunes State Park, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Chicago museums, and local parks and gardens. One course even includes an overnight camping trip into southern Michigan.

Extracurricular Activities:
Among the more than 100 clubs and organizations at Valpo is the EarthTones, which promotes a variety of environmental activities, including recycling and composting on campus and service to the Northwest Indiana community. Also, the Biology Club is active in stream habitat restoration.

Independent Research and Internship Opportunities:
Environmental Science students are prepared for their professional experience by taking part in an internship or Co-op program, or carrying out independent scientific research project of environmental merit with the help and guidance of a Ph.D.-level faculty mentor.

Study Abroad:
Students may take advantage of Valpo's 14 study abroad programs in countries such as Mexico, England, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Namibia, China, and Japan as well as in programs in New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Environmental internships are available through several of these programs.
