Professor Zhang has taught various courses on Chinese language, literature, history, and culture as well as the broader topic of East Asian civilization. At Valparaiso University, he is teaching Chinese language courses at different levels, such as Beginning Chinese and Fourth Year Chinese, and literature and culture courses, such as Masterworks in Chinese Literature and Contemporary China in Mass Media. He is familiar with proficiency-oriented instruction, integrating it with current technological and multimedia resources into language and literature instruction. Professor Zhang’s current research on nostalgia in lore and poetry adopts a multidisciplinary approach to poems on history. In addition, he is undertaking another project on how to teach Chinese language through culture. He has published a translated book, book chapters, peer-reviewed articles, and book reviews in the field of Chinese studies. He has also contributed to several government-sponsored projects in the U.S., Canada, and China.
