Etiquette Tip of the Week

Last week’s Etiquette Tip of the Week was about networking for a job at holiday parties by asking those you meet about their job and company.  What next?

Don’t pounce on people with desperate pitches. Instead, look for inroads. Here are some examples: Do you have any advice for someone like me who is just getting started in your field?I have enjoyed speaking with you and I am trying to build more contacts in your line of work. Do you mind if I call and make an appointment to speak to you further? My background is in marketing research. I know that is not your area, but can you recommend a good person at your company I could speak to?  If you are really a star, you will send a note to a few of these people at their office that says, “I enjoyed meeting you at the Smith’s party…” etc.

Don’t be discouraged that many companies are not hiring in December. They still may recruit and do initial interviews in December for hiring in January or February. Stick to your job search like a dog on a pant leg and soon enough you will be barking with the big dogs.

Office of Admissions – November Visit Day Summary

The Office of Admissions’ fall visit season officially ended on November 30.  In addition to welcoming a record number of prospective applicants for a personal visit, we were pleased to hold two large events in November. Across September, October, and November 2012, Assistant Directors Mike Ramian and Kelly Kruger, and Admissions Assistant Ryan Reed (Class of 2013), hosted 99 visitors—an astounding 350% increase over the number of visitors hosted in fall 2011!

In addition to welcoming a record number of prospective applicants for a personal visit, we were pleased to hold two large events in November. On November 7, Mike and law student Jon Zimmerman (Class of 2014) hosted 38 Valparaiso University Admissions Ambassadors for an extended informational tour of both Wesemann and Heritage Halls. Then, on November 14, Mike and Kelly hosted 14 non-traditional prospects and their 6 guests. After a welcome that included introductions and refreshments, all our guests participated in an Admissions 101 session led by Mike, learned about student life from four of our current law students–all non-traditional students themselves—and, were given a full, informational tour of the law school.
