Equal Justice Works (EJW)

Formed in 1990, the goal of the Equal Justice Works (formerly Equal Justice Alliance) is to encourage the pursuit and support of public interest law. Members host programs and bring speakers to Valparaiso to discuss important themes of public service law; research and identify public service employment opportunities; and develop specific opportunities for students to serve as legal interns or volunteer clerks in legal offices or agencies that work in the public interest. The Equal Justice Works is affiliated with the National Association for Public Interest Law (NAPIL).

At Valparaiso University School of Law, the Equal Justice Works advocates for students to seek work in the public sector by offering scholarships, directly paid to students in the form of a check, for unpaid or low-paid summer public sector work. Any student who works in the public sector may apply for this scholarship, but the scholarship is not available to students who are working for academic credit (e.g. externship) or for pro bono. This scholarship is unrelated to the Career Planning Center’s Summer Public Interest Scholarship, but students may apply for and receive both scholarships simultaneously. Applications for the Equal Justice Works Scholarship are available in the spring from any Board member.
