MST active at 2019 Joint Mathematics Meetings

Members of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics were active at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM), the largest annual math conference in the world, held January 16-19 in Baltimore, Maryland.  JMM is a joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

Assistant Professor Jon Beagley gave a talk entitled “Cumulative Assignments in Calculus” based on joint work with Associate Professor Mindy Capaldi.  Capaldi also attended the conference and participated in the meeting of the MAA’s Committee on the Teaching of Undergraduate Mathematics.

Associate Professor Ken Luther participated in a workshop on “Advanced WebWork Problem Authoring”.

Associate Provost Rick Gillman  attended four committee meetings, including his first meeting as an Associate Editor of the journal PRIMUS.  Gillman also served in an invited panel on “coping professionally with unprofessional behavior” which was co-organized by Professor Zsuzsanna Szaniszlo.  In addition to planning the panel, Szaniszlo was a member of an invited panel entitled “What every student should know about the JMM” and participated in meetings of the MAA’s Committee on Competitions and the AMC-8 Competition Committee.

Together with Gillman, Assistant Professor Karl Schmitt hosted a table advertising Valpo’s graduate programs at the conference’s graduate school fair.  Schmitt also organized a session on “Technology and resources in statistics and data science education” and attended both the MAA Committee meeting for Technology in Math Education and the meeting of the Statistics Education Special Interest Group of the MAA.

Associate Professor Lara Pudwell co-hosted a reunion dinner for the Valparaiso Experience in Research by Undergraduate Mathematicians program along with Beagley and she attended the MAA’s section officers meeting as chair of the Indiana section of the MAA.
