Brauer Museum of Art at Valpo Announces Winter Exhibitions

Opening Reception is Jan. 15

Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art continues to grow its permanent collection with major acquisitions from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. These new pieces, ranging from abstract to representational, contribute to the Brauer Museum’s overview of important development in the history of American art.

The winter exhibitions kick off with an opening reception Jan. 15, 2017, and run through April 2. “Sand & Steel: Visions of Our Indiana Shore,” curated by Gregg Hertzlieb in the Wehling and McGill Galleries, draws primarily from the Brauer Museum’s permanent collections and features representations of the Indiana Dunes as well as the regional steel mills. This exhibition enjoyed a successful run at South Shore Arts in Munster and returns home to the Brauer to further celebrate regional and statewide anniversaries.

In the Education Room, “The MARTIN Bell: A Commemoration to MLK in Form, Sound, & Action,” complements the University’s annual MLK Celebration with a sculpture by Bill Jeter.

“American Byways: Selections from U.S. Highway 80” features photographs by Rebecca Nolan in Gallery 1212. Nolan is a noted photographer and educator who in this series chronicled her travels across the United States.

The popular series Thursday Night Noir returns Jan. 19 with the 1946 film “Black Angel.” The film/lecture series offers film screenings and discussions throughout the semester that explore the classic film genre. Four iconic movies will be featured by Indiana University Northwest Performing Arts faculty member and creator of the lecture series, Peter Aglinskas. All events are free and open to the public.

The Valparaiso University Art Student Exhibition returns in April, featuring students’ original artwork, along with “Botanical Lore, Legend and Transformation: Works by Jon Hook and Andrea Peterson” and “The Art of Ernst Schwidder.”

The summer exhibitions include new acquisitions as well as “Duneland on Display: Works by the Duneland Plein Air Painters.”

Throughout the season, the Brauer Museum will host additional coffee hours and gallery talks with artists, curators and art collectors.
