Opening Reception is May 21

Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art will premiere its summer exhibitions, featuring new acquisitions to its permanent collection as well as works by the Duneland Plein Air Painters, with an opening reception on Sunday, May 21, at 2 p.m. in the Center for the Arts on Valparaiso University’s campus. The exhibitions run from May 19 to Aug. 6.

The Wehling, McGill and West Galleries will display new acquisitions to the Brauer Museum’s permanent collection, which boasts more than 3,800 works of art from the mid-19th century to the present.

The Ferguson Gallery will feature “Duneland on Display: Works by the Duneland Plein Air Painters.” Carrying on a long tradition of painting outdoors in natural light, these artists record their impression on local Northwest Indiana scenes while dealing with elements of nature. The group has painted beach scenes from Beverly Shores to West Beach as well as gardens in Michigan City, LaPorte, South Bend and Niles. Members will offer a gallery talk on Wednesday, July 12, at 7 p.m.

The exhibition in the Brauer’s Gallery 1212 by Jon Hook and Andrea Peterson—titled “Botanical Lore, Legend & Transformation”— will remain on view through Aug. 6.

The Brauer Museum of Art is open noon – 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, during the summer. All events are free and open to the public. Visit for more information about the season and upcoming events.
