Lighter named Literary Magazine of the Year

In addition to this honor, contributors to the Lighter received a number of awards for individual works.

Receiving first place are Dillon Carter of Flora, Ind., for his hand drawn illusion, “Perspective”; Lauren Nelson of North Oaks, Minn., for her free verse poem, “Scars, Maps”, and John Linstrom of South Haven, Mich., for his short poem “Fireside Poem”. The fall 2010 Staff received second place in the single issue category. Receiving third place were Karl Strasen of Littleton, Colo., for overall design, fall 2010; and Amanda Gartman of Parma, Ohio, spring 2010, for cover design.

“These awards are significant in that they demonstrate the quality of work that students create here at Valpo,” said faculty adviser Allison Schuette, assistant professor of English. “It’s one thing to be recognized by your own peers, which happens when work gets selected for the Lighter, but to have that work selected again by those who don’t know you personally confirms the merit and value of hard labors.”

Valparaiso University’s award-winning student literary journal, the Lighter invites submissions for poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, graphics, photography, drawings, paintings and all manners of work flourishing under pen, brush or computer keyboard.
