“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.”
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:
Good morning, Valpo!
Today we begin a new academic year at Valparaiso University. Some will launch and others will continue both individual and shared journeys of discovery in the common pursuit of truth.
This time of year at Valpo is always filled with great enthusiasm and energy. Today is no exception, as campus buzzes with activity. Whether you are a returning student, faculty, or staff member or joining us on campus for the very first time, I hope you experience the positive energy that comes with being part of Valpo on this first day of classes.
For those of you returning to campus, welcome back! We missed you. Those of us who have been here this summer look forward to hearing about your time away. And we relish the opportunity to embark on another year of truth-seeking, dialogue, and collaboration.
This afternoon at Opening Convocation, the incoming class will receive the Shield of Character and sign the honor code: I have neither given or received, nor have I tolerated others’ use of unauthorized aid. The honor code is a pledge that epitomizes living a life of integrity as members of the Valpo community. In this place, we hold ourselves and one another to a higher standard — one of honor, truth, and authenticity.
As the fall semester progresses, all of us will be increasingly busy with assignments, meetings, and events. In the midst of your busy schedules, I encourage you to take time for prayer and quiet discernment, whether at 10 a.m. Morning Prayer in the Chapel of the Resurrection or during a break in between classes or meetings. Making time for contemplation and reflection can be an important part of one’s daily routine that allows us to open our hearts for guidance and wisdom and to remain focused and fulfilled.
May this coming year bring you all of God’s blessings.
Mark A. Heckler, Ph.D.
