The residence halls close for Winter Break on Saturday, DECEMBER 14, 2019 at noon and will reopen after Winter Break on Sunday, JANUARY 5, 2020 at noon.

Students who are graduating in December 2019 or are participating in graduation ceremonies, should not complete the Winter Break Housing Application and visit the Graduation Extended Stay Housing Application.

Limited Break Housing is available in Alumni and the Promenade Apartments for the following reasons:

  • International Students
  • VU athletes in mid-season with practice and/or games over break
  • Students whose home is 500 or more miles from Valparaiso, Indiana
  • Students participating in a credit-bearing activity such as student teaching, internship, or co-op

Students ARE NOT automatically eligible for break housing if they hold an on or off-campus job that is not directly associated with a credit-bearing academic program.

If you do not meet any of the above criteria for Break Housing, you may submit a request based on an “Other” type of reason. PLEASE NOTE that if you are approved for Break Housing for non-University related reason(s), you will be charged a $25 per night fee for utilizing University Break Housing.

Break Housing applications are available on your Housing Self-Service. To access your Housing Self-Service page log onto DataVU then select “Housing Self-Service.” Once on your Housing Self-Service page, select the “Applications” tab and then select the “Winter Break Housing Application.”

If you are not a current resident of Alumni or Promenade you are required to obtain permission from a resident of Alumni or Promenade to occupy their room during the vacation period. Your host needs to be of the same gender. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO USE THEIR KEY. You will not be given a key to their room by the Office of Residential Life.

Residential Life has limited spaces available to host students who do not reside in break buildings or cannot find a host. Students applying for break housing after 5 p.m. on MONDAY, DECEMBER 2,2019 will not be guaranteed housing in a space provided by Residential Life.

The Office of Residential Life must receive applications for Winter Break housing by 5:00 p.m. on MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2019. Additionally, students who do not properly sign up for break housing by the posted deadlines and need accommodations may also have to pay a late application fee ($50) to receive permission to reside on campus during the break period.

If your plans change, including the dates you need break housing, or if you need to cancel your request, please contact our office at or 219-464-5413.

You will be notified via your Valpo email on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 of the status of your break housing request.
