Winter Break Housing

The residence halls close for Winter Break on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2020 at 9AM and will reopen after Winter Break on FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2021 at 9AM. To return to campus students will be asked over the break to sign-up for a scheduled date and time of return between Friday, January 22- Sunday, January 24. Break housing students will transition to their academic year assignments on Thursday, January 21 by 5PM.

Limited Break Housing is available in Alumni, Brandt, and Wehrenberg Halls (SUBJECT TO CHANGE) for the following reasons:

  • Students with verified essential needs.
    • Defined as those who are verified as:
      • International students that cannot travel due to travel restrictions.
      • Any student with housing insecurity.
      • Any student with a physically or emotionally unsafe home environment.
  • VU athletes in season with practice and/or games over the break.

Students ARE NOT automatically eligible for break housing if they hold an on or off-campus job that is not directly associated with a credit-bearing academic program.

During the break period, university dining will not be open. Students are responsible for their own food during the break period.

Break Housing applications are available on your Housing Self-Service. To access your Housing Self-Service page log onto DataVU then select “Housing Self-Service.” Once on your Housing Self-Service page, select the “Applications” tab and then select the “Winter Break Housing Application.”

If you are not a current resident of a break building you are required to obtain permission from a resident of a break building to occupy their room during the vacation period. Your host needs to be of the same gender. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO USE THEIR KEY. You will not be given a key to their room by the Office of Residential Life.

Residential Life has limited spaces available to host students who do not reside in break buildings or cannot find a host. Students applying for break housing after 5PM. on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2020 will not be guaranteed housing in a space provided by Residential Life.

The Office of Residential Life must receive applications for Winter Break housing by 5:00PM on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2020. Additionally, students who do not properly sign up for break housing by the posted deadlines and need accommodations may also have to pay a late application fee ($50) to receive permission to reside on campus during the break period.

If your plans change, including the dates you need break housing, or if you need to cancel your request, please contact our office at or 219-464-5413.
