My research explores inequality and activism in our food system. I am particularly interested in how activists utilize the marketplace as a tool to effect social change. I look at this by focusing on “politicized production,” or the making and selling of products in order to effect social change. My work examines a key conundrum faced by alternative food activists working in this realm: can you make a difference while simultaneously making a living, or are these two goals contradictory in our increasingly individualized, capitalist society? To better understand this, I’m currently talking with young sustainable farmers across the US about how they position themselves as “activist-entrepreneurs” in alternative food marketplaces, and how they struggle to balance their needs to make a profit with their goals for food system reform. In other aspects of my work, I’ve explored gender and racial inequality in food systems in the US and Southeast Asia, and the dynamics of contemporary environmental activism in the US.

When I’m not in the office, I enjoy watching The Office, gardening with my family, and walking through the prairies at Taltree Arboretum.
