Lighting the Way | Adelle Holder’s ’24 Purpose-Filled Path in Mechanical Engineering
Adelle Holder ’24 came to Valpo ready to build her future in engineering. What she found was a place that welcomed her as she was and helped her discover all she could become. Drawn to Valparaiso University’s nationally ranked College of Engineering, Adelle chose mechanical engineering because she loved to build and solve problems. But her journey quickly became about more than equations and machinery – it became a story of growing confidence, finding her voice, and uncovering a more profound sense of purpose.

From her earliest classes, Adelle was immersed in a hands-on, collaborative environment that emphasized technical excellence and innovation with heart. With small class sizes and faculty who knew her name, she was encouraged to push boundaries and explore the many ways engineering could be used to serve and uplift others. That culture of mentorship led to more than academic growth. With personalized guidance and career support, Adelle landed competitive internships where she applied classroom concepts to complex challenges. Each experience strengthened her belief that she belonged in the room, had something to offer, and could shape meaningful change. Adelle shares, “One of the biggest things that prepared me was that I got a lot of background in a lot of different areas of engineering… my classes gave me the skills that allowed me to do my internship.”

Valpo’s impact wasn’t limited to labs and lectures. As Adelle juggled class projects and professional goals, she found herself developing resilience, compassion, and a grounded sense of self. When preparing for graduate school, Adelle carried with her a rigorous education and a deep understanding of purpose. She departed from Valpo equipped with knowledge and shaped by values, ready to shine in every space she enters. Regarding the opportunities Adelle received through Valpo, Adelle reflects, “With graduate school, I think being able to have undergraduate research opportunities at Valpo really helped. It helped me also get my foot in the door with one of my internships for the summer!”
Her story mirrors the heart of Valparaiso University, where students are challenged to grow and inspired to serve. Adelle’s light is just one of many, and serves as a reminder that at Valpo, brilliance isn’t just taught – it’s ignited, nurtured, and set free to radiate far beyond our campus.
