Applying for Financial Aid

1. Complete application for Admission
This application is used to award our merit and academic based scholarships.

2. Complete the FAFSA – Federal Code 001842
To be eligible for federal, state, or institutional gift aid, you MUST file the FAFSA. A FSA User ID is required to electronically sign and is required of both parent and student for the on-line application. You can request a FSA User ID at  studentaid.gov. You will need this ID to complete the FAFSA application.

3. Prepare to verify your information

 Only those selected and contacted need to send in requested material.
Once Valparaiso University has received your FAFSA information, you may be required to submit additional documentation, such as a federal tax transcript, W-2’s, and verification worksheet(s) sent by the Office of Financial Aid. If you have been selected, please return the requested documentation to the Office of Financial Aid as soon as possible so your student’s award can be completed. Not sending in the necessary documentation can cause a delay in your financial aid eligibility.

4. Sign your Master Promissory Note
Students receiving a Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubidized  Loan for the first time must sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Completing the MPN indicates your understanding that this loan will need to repaid once you complete your degree or drop below half-time status.
Federal Direct Loan prom notes can be signed electronically any time.

5. Complete entrance counseling
The government requires first time borrowers of the Federal Direct Loans (Subsidized/Unsubsidized) to complete entrance counseling to ensure you understand the conditions of your loan before you accept the funds. It is a one time only 30 minute on-line tutorial.

6. Apply for alternative loans/PLUS Loans/Payment Plans
If after you receive your financial aid letter and you still have costs not covered by your current aid, the student may apply for an alternative student loan to cover the rest of his/her balance. The parent may also apply for the Federal PLUS loan or you may set up a payment plan. Information about alternative loans, the PLUS loan, and payment plans will be sent with the student’s award letter.
