About

For junior Joe Atuquaye Clottey, leadership and community go hand in hand. As a biomechanical engineering major and the current president of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) at Valparaiso University, Joe invited students from all STEM majors to NSBE. He explained to OMP that the organization gives opportunities for internships, co-ops, and job experiences starting as early as freshman year. It’s about helping students connect, network, and gain real-world experience.

Born to Ghanaian parents who immigrated to the U.S. over two decades ago, Joe is proud of his cultural roots. “They are from the Ga tribe, and I speak the Ga language,” he shares. “It’s not the main language in Ghana—that’s Twi—but it’s special to me that my parents taught us where we come from.”
He said, Thanks to the Dean of the College of Engineering, most of our expenses for NSBE conferences are covered. “That means we can focus on learning and networking without worrying about finances. Going forward, I hope Valpo continues giving more students the chance to lead and grow.” Outside the lab and classroom, Joe enjoys spending time in some of Valpo’s most underrated spaces. “Honestly, the floor lounges in different buildings are my favorite spots. Studying, talking with friends, just being part of campus life.”
For new students, Joe’s advice is simple but powerful:
Stay focused and remember your purpose here. Valpo is a great place for people who want to be serious about their studies without the distractions of a huge campus. You can really spread your wings and become a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
