TESOL Programs

As a teacher, you make powerful connections with students each day. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (often refered to as TESOL) prepares individuals from a variety of backgrounds to teach English to non-native speakers in the U.S. and internationally. With a Teacher Certification licensure add-on from Valparaiso University, you’ll gain the skills needed to provide a thriving learning atmosphere for English language learners in your classroom.

Teacher Certification in TESOL

Licensed teachers can add a content area with this 18-credit certificate.

  • Teachers currently licensed in the state of Indiana can now complete this targeted TESOL certificate, leading to the addition of the EL (English Learners) content area to their teaching license.

  • Our program is approved by the Indiana Department of Education for professional EL (English Learners) certification.
  • Our program offers structured practical experience through a teaching practicum that may be available at your place of work.
  • The teacher certification in TESOL is stackable toward the full M.A. in TESOL.
  • The teacher certification can be completed on a part-time basis through evening and summer coursework.

  • Students currently or previously enrolled in a graduate degree program at Valparaiso University need only submit the application for the teacher certification program in TESOL, updated transcripts, and evidence of prior experience learning a foreign language.
  • All others must, in addition to the above, meet standard admission requirements of the Graduate School.

M.A. in TESOL

  • Individuals from a variety of backgrounds who wish to teach English to non-native speakers
  • Currently practicing teachers who want to expand their teaching to include English language learners
  • Individuals with English or foreign-language expertise who have a desire to teach and travel overseas
  • International students with expertise in English who wish to help other non-native speakers master the English language

Ours is an expert faculty-led program in which:

  • M.A. TESOL students must meet general Graduate School admission requirements plus demonstrate at least 15 credits of college English coursework (such as a minor) or evidence of prior experience learning a foreign language.
  • Additional requirements for international students:
    • Non-native English speakers must have an undergraduate English major or equivalent and demonstrate an English language proficiency score of TOEFL 83+, IELTS 6.5+ with no subscore below 6.0, or Gateway English course with a grade of A- or higher.
    • International students who meet all other admission requirements besides language proficiency may be admitted provided that they satisfactorily complete the Interlink language program on our campus.
    • Currently enrolled undergraduate students at Valparaiso University may apply for early entry into the program and, if provisionally admitted, to enroll in graduate coursework during their senior year that may be applied to both their undergraduate and graduate degrees. For the latest in information about early entry, please see the 2016–17 graduate catalog, p. 105.

TESOL Certificate

Valparaiso University offers a 15-credit graduate TESOL certificate.

  • Students in Valpo graduate programs with a language or international focus, such as English studies and communication or international commerce and policy, Chinese studies, or the master of arts in liberal studies
  • Non-degree students in the Graduate School, including international students and members of the Northwest Indiana community
  • Graduate students preparing for “gap year” programs such as Fulbright or Peace Corps

  • The certificate expands career possibilities for those who anticipate teaching the English language to adults in the U.S. or internationally.
  • Students gain practical experience through a hands-on teaching practicum. Valparaiso University’s vibrant international community offers many opportunities to interact with speakers of other languages.
  • Up to nine credits for the certificate can overlap with selected degree programs. (See the graduate catalog for details.) Thus, a 36-credit program with nine TESOL certificate credits counting as electives toward the M.A. program yields an M.A. plus the certificate in 42 credits.
  • The credits are stackable toward the full M.A. in TESOL.
  • Students may take classes as full-time or part-time students. Courses are available in the evenings and during the summer.

  • Students currently or previously enrolled in a graduate degree program at Valparaiso University need only submit the application for the TESOL certificate, updated transcripts, and evidence of prior experience learning a foreign language.
  • All others must, in addition to the above, meet standard admission requirements of the Graduate School.
