Meredith William “Buzz” Berg, professor emeritus of history, passed away on May 30, 2015. Professor Berg retired in 2011 after having served the University for 48 years.
Theodore (Ted) C. Schwan, died Sept. 29, 2014, in San Ramon, Calif. Ted was the son of the late Rev. Theodore E. and Erna Hoffman Schwann. In 1942, he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Valparaiso University and a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame.
He married Betty Kelley, whom he had met in high school in Mishawaka, Ind. After the war, Ted returned to Indiana, where he taught chemistry at Valparaiso University in 1948.
While at Valpo, his research included experiments in polymer chemistry and alternative energy sources for vehicles. He also taught around the world and with his family enjoyed many international adventures.
Ted received many grants and awards, including the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund Grants, Best Teacher Award at King Faisal University College of Medicine, Saudi Arabia, Valparaiso University Alumni Distinguished Teacher Award, Top 150 Most Influential Valpo People Award, and Valparaiso Parks Foundation Volunteer of the Year. He and his wife also established the Schwan Family Scholarship Fund at Valparaiso University.
Ted retired from Valpo as professor emeritus after 37 years of service and moved to Thousand Oaks, Calif. where he was senior mentor at California Lutheran University.
Ted is survived by his wife Betty, who also received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Valparaiso University, four children — T. Carl Schwan ’66 (Ruth Ann), Judy Schwan Gordon ’69 (Robert ’69), Kurt Schwan ’71 (Penny), and Margaret Schwan Beeler ’76 (Gary Brett), eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Carl Frederick Galow Jr., 85, died April 8, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bette. He is survived by his daughter, Martha (Tim) Fuller.
Galow received his B.A. from Valparaiso University in 1957, followed by a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin and a doctor of education from Oklahoma State University.
Galow arrived at Valparaiso University in the late 1960s and founded the University’s journalism program and later served as chair of the newly created Journalism Department and Dean of Men. Later, Galow was the director of Valpo’s Cambridge Study Center, and retired from teaching in the Communications Department in the mid-1990s.
Outside of his career, Galow watched college basketball and football, was an avid reader, played handball, and enjoyed woodworking. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and generous heart.
Rev. Karl Ernst Lutze, 94, died May 7, 2015, in Valparaiso, Ind. He was born June 24, 1920, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Charles and Alma Gerbing Lutze. After graduating from Concordia Seminary–St. Louis, he married Esther Peters, who preceded him in death. Rev. Lutze is survived by his wife Gail Jones Lutze, whom he married on September 26, 1996.
Rev. Lutze is further survived by sons Peter Lutze of Valparaiso, Ind., Stephen (Michelle) Lutze of Austin, Texas, Thomas (Abigail Jahiel) Lutze of Normal, Ill., Mark (Hilda Demuth) Lutze of Valparaiso, Ind., stepsons Bradley Blask of Key West, Fla., and Christopher (Donna) Blask of Orlando, Fla., 14 grandchildren, and four granddaughters-in-law.
Rev. Lutze was a founding member of Project Neighbors and served on the boards of PACT (Prisoners and Community Together) and the Lutheran Deaconess Association. He is the author of seven books, including the 2014 publication “Into a Wider World.”
At Valpo, Rev. Lutze received the Martin Luther King Jr. Award, the Lumen Christi Medal (with Esther), and the Andrew Schulze Award. In 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate at Concordia Lutheran University–St. Paul. On May 3, 2015, Rev. Lutze was consecrated as an honorary deacon in the Community of Lutheran Deacons.
Gisela Gerber Zech ’66, 70, died May 3, 2015, at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif. She is survived by her husband, Ron Zech ’65, their two sons, Kurt and Erik, and six grandchildren.
Gisela earned a B.A. in sociology and geography at Valparaiso University and a teaching degree at the University of Wisconsin. She and Ron met during their freshman year at Valparaiso University. While at Valpo, Gisela was a member of the Alpha Phi Delta Sorority. Gisela is most remembered for her caring, positive, and engaging presence in the lives of her family, friends, and students.
Gisela and Ron recently established the Gisela and Ron Zech Endowed Scholarship Fund at Valparaiso University, which provides scholarships for seriously wounded members of the armed forces or their dependents. Gifts in memory of Gisela may be directed to this scholarship.
Rev. Daniel C. Brockopp, 81, died Jan. 1, 2016, in Portage, Wis. He is survived by his wife, Leona, whom he married on May 18, 2008. Born on Sept. 7, 1934, in Glidden, Wis., he was the son of the late Rev. William and Martha Brockopp. Rev. Brockopp grew up in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Glidden, Wis., where his father served as pastor. He earned a B.S. in education at Concordia College, a bachelor of theology from Concordia Theological Seminary, and a master of sacred theology from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
In 1962, Rev. Brockopp was ordained into the Holy Ministry of the Lutheran Church. He began his career at Valparaiso University in 1964, which spanned 35 years. He retired as the University pastor and dean of the Chapel in 1998. During his time at Valpo, he provided spiritual guidance to innumerable students, faculty, and community members.
In recent years, he taught Bible classes at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Portage, Wis. and provided counsel on liturgical theology to the pastoral staff. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife to Door County and to England.
