Valpo Remembers

Alfred R. Looman ’42, age 100, of Lenexa, Kansas, formerly of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016. He was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Beards town, Illinois, the son of Henry and Johanna (Stegemann) Looman, and graduated from Beards town High School and Valparaiso University. Alfred was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on a number of committees and at the Immanuel Food Pantry. He and his wife, Jane, were members of the choir for 45 years.

As a 1942 Valparaiso University graduate, Alfred held a variety of administrative positions at the University for more than 34 years. He retired as dean of admissions and financial aid. He was a past president of the Midwest College Placement Association and vice president of the National College Placement Council and chairman of its editorial committee. He was also co-editor of the first book on college unions, and for 13 years contributed a column to the Valparaiso University publication, The Cresset. He was also a past president of Vale Day School and a past secretary of Lutherland Inc. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, Alfred retired from the U.S. Naval Reserves with the rank of captain.

On Aug. 12, 1949, in Lakewood, Ohio, he married Jane Mae Halter ’84H, and they remained happily married until her death in June 2015. Survivors include their sons: David ’73 (Courtnay) Looman of Washington, Pennsylvania and Robert ’77 (Joni) Looman of Lenexa, Kansas; daughter-in-law: Donna Craven ’74 of Glencoe, Illinois; grand children: Alison, Mark, Zack, Beth, and Molly; and three great-grandchildren: Kelly, Carolyn Jane, and Clare. He was also preceded in death by his parents, brother Carl, and sisters Ruth and Norma; and by daughter Beth in 1967 and son
James ’74 in 2009.

Arlin Glenn Meyer, age 79, of Valparaiso, Indiana, died on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017 at his home. He was born in Sioux Center, Iowa, on Sept. 17, 1937, to the late Henk and Hermina (Ten Harmsel) Meyer. Professor Meyer was a resident of Valparaiso, Indiana, since 1967 and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, Indiana. He earned a bachelor of arts from Calvin College, a master of arts from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. from Ohio University. Professor Meyer began his teaching career as a high school teacher at Holland Christian High School in Holland, Michigan.

He served as dean of Christ College — The Honors College from 1978 until 1990 and was responsible for introducing the concept of symposium to the Christ College curriculum, which exists as a core part of the college today.

During his time at the University, Professor Meyer first served as a member of the English department and later as the chair of the English department prior to his induction as the dean of Christ College. Following his retirement from the position of dean in 1990, Professor Meyer resumed his duties as a faculty member in the English department and began to serve as the director of the Lilly Fellows Program. He also served as the resident director for the University’s Study Abroad program at the study center in Cambridge, England. Professor Meyer retired from the University in 2002 but remained active in the Valparaiso, Indiana, area. Every two years, the Lilly Fellows Program awards the Arlin G. Meyer Award for fine arts, which is given to honor exemplary submissions in visual art, performance, imaginative writing, and nonfiction. Most recently, the award went to Lisa J. Deboer for her book “Visual Arts in the Worshiping Church.”
