Philip Gehring ’84H
Philip Gehring ’84H, age 94, professor emeritus of music and former University organist at Valparaiso University, passed away Oct. 6, 2020.
Professor Gehring joined the Valparaiso University faculty in 1958 and taught organ, improvisation, and other subjects and served as University organist. In 1985, Professor Gehring was named the first Frederick A. and Maize N. Reddel Professor of Music at Valparaiso University. He was also named an honorary alumnus and received the Christus Rex Award for significant contributions to Lutheran liturgical scholarship and renewal.
After his retirement from Valparaiso University in 1989, he remained active as a composer and performer. In 2019, Professor Gehring and William Eifrig ’55 were honored in an event with performances celebrating the lasting legacy of the two professors emeriti.
Roderick “Rod” Gardner Moore II
Roderick “Rod” Gardner Moore II, age 75, passed away July 8, 2020.
Rod served Valparaiso University and Valpo Athletics as head athletic trainer for nearly 50 years. He became head athletic trainer in 1967 while completing his undergraduate studies and held the role until his retirement on Sept. 1, 2016. He was the primary athletic trainer for men’s basketball throughout his 49-year tenure and worked with the football program for more than four decades.
Rod was also a long-time lecturer within Valparaiso University’s physical education department and helped develop the department’s athletic training major. His service to Valpo Athletics was honored in 2017 when he was inducted into the Valpo Athletics Hall of Fame.
Throughout the years, Rod received numerous accolades for his work both at Valpo and industry-wide. He was inducted into the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2003, and, in 2014, Rod received the Golden Pinnacle Award from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (GLATA), the highest honor a GLATA member can receive.
Rod served as chair of the National Athletic Trainers Association from 1978–1980, was president of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association from 1978–1980, and was a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He also served as head athletic trainer at an NCAA College Division Track & Field Championship, as the medical director for regional competition at the Hoosier State Games, and as an athletic trainer at the field hockey venue for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Rod was an active member of the Valparaiso community, serving with the Valparaiso Parks & Recreation Department and the Valparaiso Community School District. He also served on the board of directors for the Lutheran Basketball Association of America (LBAA) National Tournament, which has been held on Valpo’s campus since 1971, in addition to overseeing the tournament’s officials and athletic trainers.
Theodore “Ted” M. Ludwig
Theodore “Ted” M. Ludwig, age 83, professor emeritus of theology, passed away Aug. 11, 2020.
Professor Ludwig taught in Valpo’s theology department from 1968 until his retirement in 2003, specializing in Old Testament studies and world religions. He was valued for his good humor, inclusive spirit, intelligence, helping hands and kind heart.
In 1998 he became the first occupant of the Surjit S. Patheja Chair in World Religions and Ethics. He authored or co-authored many articles and books, including the textbook “The Sacred Paths — Understanding the Religions of the World,” currently in its fourth edition.
Professor Ludwig and his wife engaged with the Valparaiso Builders Association (VBA), which was instrumental in creating affordable housing for the first Black families to move into the then all-white Valpo from housing projects in Chicago. Since 1986, the VBA has been known as Project Neighbors, and the organization has expanded into affordable daycare, health care, education, human relations, and economic development for those in need.
Howard Nevin Peters
Howard Nevin Peters, age 81, professor emeritus of foreign languages and literatures, passed away May 28, 2020.
Professor Peters taught Spanish language and literature, creating unique ways for his students to grasp the ins and outs of Spanish grammar and inspiring them to delve deeply into Spanish literature. During his time at Valpo, Professor Peters served in various administrative positions, including director of the Graduate Division and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, before returning to his first love, the classroom, where he completed his 30 years of dedication to the University.
His area of research and publication was Spanish drama, which took him frequently to Spain; it became like a second home. He traveled there extensively, and shortly before his death, he completed his dream of journeying bit by bit around the entire periphery of the country. His book of philosophical poetry, “Espejo de Son” (“Mirror of Sound”) was published in Madrid in 1997.
Donald “Don” Findling ’50
Donald “Don” Findling ’50, age 95, passed away July 7, 2020.
A lifelong resident of Valparaiso, Don graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1943 as valedictorian and served three years in World War II in both Europe and Japan, achieving the rank of army staff sergeant. He transferred to Valparaiso University in 1947 and competed on the Valpo football team for three seasons.
After playing center in 1947 and 1948, Don transitioned to the quarterback position for the 1949 season. He was a two-way player, also playing linebacker on defense, and received All-American Football honors in 1947.
After graduating from Valpo with degrees in business and economics, Don received a letter from the Cleveland Rams offering him a tryout; instead, he began his career as an accountant for a farm equipment dealer in Valpo. After 14 years there, he returned to the University, where he worked for 26 years before retiring as chief accountant.
Stanley Leake Hughes, Ph.D.
Stanley Leake Hughes, Ph.D., assistant professor emeritus of psychology, age 76, passed away March 30, 2020.
Professor Hughes retired from Valparaiso University in August 2011 after 18 years of service. Throughout his time at Valpo, Professor Hughes taught in the undergraduate psychology and the graduate clinical mental health counseling programs.
His specialty courses, including Childhood and Adolescent Development, Personality Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology, were extremely popular, drawing large numbers of students each semester. A consummate teacher, Professor Hughes mentored students both inside and outside the classroom. His outstanding teaching and research were recognized with the Valparaiso University Alumni Association Faculty Fellowship Award (1999).
Floyd Lee Henderson ’57
Floyd Lee Henderson ’57, age 87, passed away April 11, 2020, in New Hope, Minnesota.
In 1951, Floyd became the first African American to compete in intercollegiate athletics at Valparaiso University, and in 2013 he was inducted into the Valpo Athletics Hall of Fame.
Floyd competed in both football and track and field for Valpo and was known for his electrifying runs on the gridiron, both as a halfback and as a punt returner. Following his sophomore year, Floyd served two years active duty in the United States Army, where he was a starter on the U.S. Army 5th Division football team. Following graduation, Floyd was invited to NFL tryouts with the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.
Following his graduation from Valpo with a degree in business administration, Floyd earned a master’s degree in library science and enjoyed a distinguished career as a manager in the biological science division of the United States Forestry Service. Floyd continued to work part time at various Minneapolis Public Libraries, just to be around books and to help children learn to find what they needed in the library.
Robert “Bob” Metcalf ’50
Robert “Bob” Metcalf ’50, age 93, passed away April 16, 2020.
Inducted into the Valpo Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, Bob was a standout on the men’s basketball team from 1946–1950. He graduated from Merrillville High School in 1944, served in the United States Navy for two years, and, after graduating from Valpo, coached at three different Illinois high schools from 1950–1980. During his three-decade prep coaching career, Bob totaled 426 wins and 31 championships. In 1980, he began spending time in China, Mongolia, Indonesia, and Sudan training basketball coaches and players.
Bob was the executive director of the Illinois Coaches Association from 1974–1982 and the president of the National High School Athletic Coaches Association in 1978. After teaching and coaching at Waterman and Glenbard West, he continued his prep basketball coaching career at University High School in Bloomington, Illinois, where he was also the athletic director and golf coach.
During his playing days at Valpo, Bob was an All-American in 1949 and 1950. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and a member of East White Oak Bible Church for more than 50 years, serving as the chairman of the board and in many other capacities.
Rev. Richard P. Baepler, Ph.D., ’11H
Rev. Richard P. Baepler, Ph.D., ’11H, former vice president for academic affairs, founding dean of Christ College — The Honors College, and professor emeritus of theology and law, passed away Nov. 19, 2020.
A lifelong scholar, Professor Emeritus Baepler received his bachelor’s degree from St. Paul’s College in Concordia, Missouri, master’s degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, and doctorate in theology from the University of Chicago. Professor Baepler began his professional career as an ordained minister of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod. He was called as an assistant minister to Faith Lutheran Church in Valparaiso and attended services there throughout his life. He studied at Theologische Hoschschule in Hamburg, Germany, and the University of Erlangen-Nuremburg in Bavaria, Germany. He married his wife, Simone, in 1954 in her native Paris, France.
He joined the Valpo faculty in 1954 as a professor of theology, eventually serving as chair of the department. In 1966, President O.P. Kretzmann appointed him founding dean of Christ College — The Honors College. He provided guidance and leadership for the new college as it found its footing in the Valpo community and helped grow the program into the beginnings of what it is today. In 1979, he became vice president for academic affairs.
After his retirement in 1999, Professor Baepler authored several articles and three books, “Flame of Faith, Lamp of Learning: A History of Valparaiso University,” “Witness to his Generation: Selected Writings of John Strietelmeier,” and “Keeper of the Dream: O.P. Kretzmann.”
He was granted honorary alumni membership in 2011 for exemplary ideals of achievement and service in his association with the University. He was recognized as a foundation member of Eta of Indiana Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for his display of commitment to the study of liberal arts and sciences through scholarship and achievements as a distinguished scholar and author. During his tenure, he served as an early advocate of the value of establishing affiliations with organizations such as Phi Beta Kappa.
Rin Curtis ’76 Seibert
Rin Curtis ’76 Seibert, former director of recreational sports and associate director of athletics, passed away Aug. 21, 2020.
Rin retired in February 2020 after leading recreational sports at Valpo for four decades. She was hired to her post in August 1980 and was elevated from an assistant director of athletics to an associate director of athletics in August 2017.
Rin received the NIRSA Regional Award of Merit for Outstanding Contributions to Region III in 2016, the Panhellenic Council Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015, and the Valparaiso University Outstanding Service Award for 30 years of service in 2010. She also served as a member of Valpo’s faculty, instructing undergraduate courses in the Department of Kinesiology.
After graduating from Valpo in 1976 with a degree in physical education, Rin spent two years as an assistant director at the Valparaiso Family YMCA, where she helped build the competitive gymnastics program. She then took on a graduate assistantship in recreational sports at Indiana University in Bloomington, where she earned her master’s in recreation in 1979. She earned the 2017 Interscholastic Athletic Official Award for excellence in the sport of gymnastics.
Rin’s Valpo legacy will live on through the Rin Seibert Scholarship, an initiative spearheaded by the Valpo volleyball program and head coach Carin Avery during the 2019 season. The program set out to recognize Rin’s courage and faith through her battles with cancer and to thank her for her longtime support of Valpo volleyball, Valpo Athletics, and the Department of Kinesiology by raising funds for a scholarship in her name.
Rev. Walter M. Wangerin Jr. ’86H
Rev. Walter M. Wangerin Jr. ’86H, professor emeritus of English and theology, passed away on Aug. 5, 2021.
Walt was born on Feb. 13, 1944. A native of Oregon, Professor Wangerin was raised as the eldest of seven children in a family that lived in Washington, Illinois; North Dakota; and Canada.
Prior to joining the Valparaiso University faculty in 1991, he was pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Evansville, Indiana, for more than eight years. He also taught at Christ Seminary- Seminex and the Lutheran School of Theology. Earlier in his career, he was a radio announcer, an instructor at the University of Evansville and an award-winning newspaper columnist. He was also an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), a columnist for Lutheran Magazine, and was a speaker for Lutheran Vespers, the nationally syndicated radio ministry of the ELCA, beginning in 1994.
Professor Wangerin authored numerous critically acclaimed books on subjects ranging from fiction to children’s literature to practical theology and devotionals. His “The Book of the Dun Cow” (Harper & Row, 1978) was named The New York Times’ Best Children’s Book of the Year and received The American Book Award. His subsequent books, now totaling more than 30, have been equally well received.
He received the Helen Keating Ott Award for outstanding contribution to children’s literature from the Church and Synagogue Library Association in 2000 and received the Wittenberg Award from The Luther Institute in 1994. A popular storyteller and speaker, Professor Wangerin appeared in an ABC television network documentary about forgiveness.
He earned an associate of arts degree at Concordia Junior College in Milwaukee; a bachelor of arts degree at Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana; a master of divinity degree at Christ Seminary-Seminex, St. Louis; and a master of arts degree from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Valparaiso University awarded him an honorary doctor of literature degree in 1986. He is survived by his wife, Ruthanne, and their four children.
Lou Jeanne Bray ’60 Walton
Lou Jeanne Bray ’60 Walton, former professor and chair of social work, passed away Feb. 28, 2021, in Gary, Indiana.
Professor Walton earned her bachelor’s in social work from Valparaiso University and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. She was one of the first Black students at Valpo and the first Black woman to receive tenure from Valparaiso University. She served as professor and chair of social work for nearly 35 years.
Affectionately known as “Boots,” Professor Walton was part of the University’s traveling modern dance group and participated in the “Miss Valparaiso” competition. As a faculty member, she served as an advisor to the Black Student Organization and a member of the Advisory Council on Multiracial Concerns. She also volunteered for local nonprofits such as Brother’s Keepers, the Open Housing Commission of Gary, Prisoners and Communities Together, and the Lutheran Human Relations Association, and she served as a member of her neighborhood “Block Club,” which analyzed housing regulations, city services, and beautification of the urban community.
Professor Walton received the O.P. Kretzmann Research Award in 1986, which was established in 1976 by the Wheat Ridge Foundation, now known as We Raise Ministries, for research in the healing arts and sciences. Through the grant, she was able to partner with urban church ministries to determine possible coordination of youth education programs with troubled young people.
Following her retirement in 2005, Professor Walton stayed connected with her alma mater and continued to advocate for community improvement in her home of Gary, Indiana. In 2018, she was honored during Valparaiso University’s annual MLK Celebration. The University established the Lou Jeanne Walton Scholars program for underrepresented students to ensure the legacy of her leadership and service will endure in perpetuity.
Alan F. Harre
Alan F. Harre, Ph.D., ’89H, president emeritus, passed away on Aug. 20, 2020. President Emeritus Harre was born on June 12, 1940, in Nashville, Illinois, to Adolph and Hilda (née Vogt) Harre and was baptized on June 23, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church. He grew up in Nashville where he attended school until his sophomore year, continuing his junior and senior year at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Concordia, Missouri, and graduated with the class of 1958.
He attended the first two years of college at St. Paul’s College and received a bachelor of arts from Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1962; a master of divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1966; a master of arts from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond, Virginia, in 1967; and a Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 1976.
President Emeritus Harre began his professional career in 1967 as assistant pastor of St. James Lutheran Church of Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, where he also served his seminary internship during the 1964–1965 academic year. In 1973, he joined the theology faculty of Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska. He also served that institution as assistant to the president, as dean of student affairs, and, for a brief period, as acting president. In July 1984, he became president of Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota. He left Concordia, St. Paul, in July 1988.
He was inaugurated as the 17th president of Valparaiso University in October 1988 and faithfully served in this position until his retirement in June 2008. In recognition of his service, he was named one of the University’s 150 most influential people in its history as part of Valpo’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2009.
Upon his inauguration at Valpo, President Emeritus Harre quickly set to work. During his tenure, he ushered in an “Age of Advancement,” overseeing three major fundraising campaigns and successfully raising more than $360 million in gifts and commitments to the University. Under his leadership, the University’s endowment increased significantly, and many campus buildings, including the Center for the Arts, the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center, and Kallay-Christopher Hall, were dedicated. Prior to his retirement, President Emeritus Harre launched the Our Valpo, Our Time campaign in 2004, which ultimately raised more than $236 million — at the time, the most ever raised by a Lutheran university.
President Emeritus Harre was heavily involved throughout Northwest Indiana. He served on the boards of directors of many local organizations including the Northwest Indiana Forum; the Quality of Life Council; the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana Inc.; Independent Colleges of Indiana; and the Indiana Campus Compact. He chaired the Council of Presidents of the Associated New American Colleges, the Presidents’ Council of the Mid-Continent Conference for three terms, and the Indiana Conference of Higher Education.
President Emeritus Harre was recognized by the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce as the recipient of the 1998 Distinguished Community Leader Award. He was the recipient of the 2006 Chief Executive Leadership Award presented by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education District V (CASE V). In 2007 he received the Quality of Life Council Lifetime Achievement Award and became an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In 2008 he received the Outstanding Executive Award from the Association of Lutheran Development Executives and the Indiana Campus Compact Presidential Award for outstanding commitment to the field of service-learning and civic engagement and advocacy for higher education’s involvement on behalf of local communities. Concordia Seminary St. Louis named President Harre as its Distinguished Alumnus award recipient in 2010, and St. Paul’s Lutheran High School presented him with its Apostle Paul award in 2011.
After his retirement, President Emeritus Harre served in a variety of positions relating to his faith. He served as the interim pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Staplehurst, Nebraska, from 2010–2011 and as the vacancy pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Waco, Nebraska, from 2012–2013. He also served as a volunteer advisor, primarily in the area of fundraising, to a number of institutions and agencies affiliated with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
President Emeritus Harre married Diane Mack in August 1964. They had three children, Andrea, Jennifer, and Eric.
