Valpo Remembers
JOHANNES “JOHN” HELMS
Johannes Helms, a long-time resident of Valparaiso, Indiana, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021, at the age of 80. He was born in 1931 in Jeypore, India, where his parents served as part of Germany’s Lutheran Breklum Mission from 1930–1950. He finished high school at Kodaikanal in southern India in 1949 then came to the United States to attend Valparaiso University, from which he graduated in 1953. He became a U.S. citizen in 1962. John also held an M.A. and a Ph.D. in classical studies from the University of Michigan. He most recently resided in Hopkins, Minnesota.
John was a devoted classics professor who began his teaching career at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and later returned to Valpo where he taught from 1963–1995. During his tenure, he served as the director of the Overseas Study Center in Reutlingen, Germany (1992–1995), led mini-session courses to Greece and Italy, and served as foreign languages department chair and as the University Marshal.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Edith Dorothea Helms; his parents, Nicolaus and Anna Hedwig Helms; his brother, Reimer Helms, and sister, Elsabe Ivens; and his son-in-law, James Roth. He is survived by sisters Karin Gruenheit, Erika Helms, Gesa Helms, and brother, Klaus Helms; his three daughters, Elizabeth Roth ’81, Joann Scozzari ’84, and Heidi Boyle ’86; four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, Indiana.
VERNER R. SANFORD
Verne Sanford, a long-time resident of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away on Jan. 23, 2022, at the age of 86. Professor Sanford was born in Waukegan, Illinois. Professor Sanford completed his undergraduate work at the University of North Dakota, where he received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1957, then an M.S. in 1959. He came to Valparaiso University in 1960 as an instructor of mathematics. He stayed for one year then attended graduate school at the University of Michigan, where he earned a master’s degree in public health in 1965 and a Ph.D. in biostatistics in 1970. He returned to Valpo as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1967. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and participated in many Valparaiso organizations.
In addition to his teaching, Professor Sanford served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 1980–1983 and coordinator of the department’s cooperative education program from 1985–1993. He served on the University Senate from 1985–1988.
Professor Sanford is survived by his wife, Marie; children, Colleen Sanford ’84 Prough (Donald ’84), Keith Sanford ’84, Paul Sanford ’88, Linda Sanford ’89 Mader, and Amy Sanford ’92 Pendowski; grandchildren, Owen (Samantha ’12) Prough ’12; Emily Prough ’12, ’15 M.A.; Nola Prough ’15; and Lois Prough; great grandchild, Alex; and sisters, Delores and Carol.
Professor Sanford was an inspiration to several generations of students and colleagues because of his courage and determination in overcoming a potentially crippling disability. Legally blind as the result of a childhood infection, he was able to make use of what little sight he had to find his way through high school, college, and graduate school. He was hard-working and creative in his efforts to secure a first-rate education.
A memorial service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, Indiana.
WILLARD “BILL” F. WELLMAN
Bill Wellman passed away on June 2, 2022. He was born to Leona Schultz and Guy Lionel Wellman in 1924 in LaPorte, Indiana. His family lived in Kouts and Lowell before settling in Valparaiso.
Bill was a WWII Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps. After enlisting at 17, Bill fought in the Pacific campaign from 1943–1945. He developed a unique respect for the patriotic song “Taps” during his time on burial duty aboard a hospital ship.
After returning home, Bill attended Valparaiso University and Indiana University where he lettered in baseball, a lifelong love. He met his wife, Joanne Elizabeth Larsch, and theymarried in November 1948.
From 1948–1958, Bill helped his father run a bar called The Corral in downtown Valparaiso. In 1958, he decided to “go big” and his family opened Wellman’s on U.S. 30. It included a restaurant, banquet rooms, bowling lanes, and live entertainment. In 1967, Bill opened the Bridge VU Dinner Theater. The theater hosted Valparaiso University productions and drama students, along with larger named acts including Phyllis Diller, Dolly Parton, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Duke Ellington. The family added the Holiday Inn to the property in 1968.
In 1974, Bill opened the Court Restaurant located across from the county courthouse. In 1976, in collaboration with Dean White of Whiteco Industries Inc., he helped design and open the Holiday Star Theater in Merrillville to increase tourism to Northwest Indiana. In 2017, he received an honorary Doctor of Commercial Service from Valparaiso University.
Bill’s other connection to the University spans back to the Student Bridge. He purchased the Student Bridge in 1968, and reassembled it near his restaurant on U.S. 30 in front of the Bridge VU Theater. In 2005, a group of engineers brought the bridge back to campus and reassembled it for more generations of Valpo grads to enjoy. The bridge will live on for years in the minds and hearts of thousands of Valpo students — current and future.
Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Liz, and his brother, Guy Wellman.
Bill is survived by his wife, Roberta Norwich; children, Dawn ’71, ’76 J.D. (Fred), Scott (Kim Doane), and Kim; grandchildren, Guy (Lisa) and Drew, Cory (Candice) and Kyle Kinney, and Erin (Jarrett).
ADDISON GILBERT “GIL” COOK
Addison Gilbert Cook went home to be with the Lord on July 8, 2022, at age 89 in Valparaiso, Indiana. Professor Cook was born on April 1, 1933, in Caracas, Venezuela, to missionary parents Harold R. and Florence (Hosie) Cook. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy (Spriggs) Cook; a brother, Harold D. (Liz) Cook; three daughters, Virginia (Ted) Kundrat, Shirley (Roy) Bodett, and Diane (Larry) Holder; and six grandchildren, Sarah, Erick (Christin), Norah, Lauren, Abigail, and Ryan.
Professor Cook grew up in Los Angeles, California, and in Wheaton, Illinois. He earned a bachelor of science in chemistry from Wheaton College (Illinois) in 1955, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign in 1959. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
Professor Cook was a brilliant professor of chemistry for nearly 60 years at Valparaiso University, where he served as department chair and as the premedical arts advisor to hundreds of medical doctors and dentists who now thank him for their careers. He wrote wonderful recommendation letters for students who went on to earn their Ph.D.s and follow in his esteemed footsteps. In 1993, he received the Valparaiso University Alumni Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award and is regarded by Valpo alumni as one of their most beloved professors who helped them find their path to success. Professor Cook was a gifted person who saw potential in his students before they recognized it in themselves.
Professor Cook had many honors bestowed upon him, including the American Institute of Chemists Award, Standard Oil Company Scholarship, Monsanto Fellowship, Lilly Fellowship, National Science Foundation Grant, and GTE Grants for the PRISMS Program. He was also a member of Phi Lambda Upsilon (chemistry), Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics), and Sigma Xi (research) honor societies.
Professor Cook is the author of many publications in professional journals such as the Journal of the American Chemical Society, The Journal of Organic Chemistry, and Journal of Nuclear and Inorganic Chemistry. He also edited the text “Enamines: Synthesis, Structure, and Reactions,” one of three authoritative sources on enamine chemistry.
Professor Cook served as a consultant to Argonne National Laboratories from 1962–1971. His research interests included physical and synthetic organic chemistry, especially enamines, amines, and organophosphorus compounds.
An active member of Liberty Bible Church in Chesterton, Indiana, Professor Cook served in numerous roles. He was an adult Sunday School teacher and small group Bible study leader, and he served as a member and chair of the elder board for a number of terms.
Aside from serving as a mentor and friend to many, Professor Cook and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going to concerts, biking, camping, and watching great old television shows and movies. He will be dearly missed.
