PRE-OP

For you I will take off
clothes, rings, consciousness
and go into the dark.

Silent, I will lie on
a slab open to be
examined and altered.

Such frail flesh hides bones, holds
hormones tightly bound, laced
in blood, in secretions
driving desire, loosening
life—

Alone,
I might float forever
in that dark tunnel, travel
through one black night to the next.
But you make escape seem
cowardice, love seem all—

And a shared sunrise
worth the sharpest cut.
