These "sleeping beauties," born of silver and light—
                                           dressed in white
christening gowns, propped on hand-knitted blankets,

placed in crepe-black carriages whose oiled glare
dazzles the camera,
                               whose sleek wheels reveal
no rust or wear,

posed as if asleep, as if they might awaken
any moment—
no other pictures, taken as they themselves
were taken.
