TOURISTS

In waves, travelers
have gone for bragging rights,
carried heavy cases full of themselves
along, then dropped crumbs
and parasites in unlikely places.
Thus the world has changed.
Today a jet liner may drop
alterations from just the treads
of two tires, touching down,
taking off.  We praise novelty,
curse loss, and cheerfully
head off again on uncomfortable
peregrinations.  We do not
come back the same, and
God pity our destination.
