CARIBE

all colors pale in its waters,
     white becomes bone,
     the rock that sinks you,

what chances, fateful nights
for those who succumb to this lure
of water, as it calls you out

to swim away into currents,
      this restlessness of days,
      teeth chatter, a clatter

of broken promises behind,
      the Siboney knew a thousand
words for this essence of liquid,

mud eyes, clay mouths,
      fatal hours when the spirit
leaves the body to join a starless

night, when all you have
     are questions, look to water
     for flickering answers.
