Sports and competition of all kinds are an integral part of life at Valpo. Committed to a student-athlete tradition and philosophy, Valpo fields 19 Division I athletic teams. Almost 16 percent of the student body participates on those teams, which provide plenty of excitement for campus sports lovers. At Valpo, athletes are students first. Reflecting the University's commitment to the success of the student-athlete, Valpo offers weekly study halls and provides student-athletes with a wide range of support services.
Valpo is a member of the Horizon League, except for the football team, which competes in the Pioneer League. The University’s legacy of athletic achievement is well known, most prominently the 1998 men’s basketball team advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.
Of course, you don’t have to be a Division I athlete to participate in sports at Valpo. More than 50 percent of Valpo students are involved in intramural sports. A great way to keep in shape, intramurals offer camaraderie and competition with little pressure and plenty of exhilaration.
To pursue other fitness opportunities, head for the courts and playing fields found around campus, the Athletics-Recreation Center (ARC), or to the recently opened Fitness Center, which offers a range of equipment and classes for almost any type of workout you can dream up. Valpo is committed to providing the resources necessary to promote health and fitness for students and staff.
