Valparaiso University Welcomes U.S. Representative Frank J. Mrvan

Frank Mrvan

U.S. Representative Frank J. Mrvan held a press conference at Valparaiso University’s LeBien Hall on Monday, February 12, 2024 regarding $1 million in federal funding he helped secure for the College of Nursing and Health Professions.

“Congratulations to Valparaiso University for your dedicated efforts to secure this federal funding award to modernize the Skills Lab and Simulation Center,” Representative Mrvan said. “I appreciate your commitment to prepare students with knowledge and skills to obtain vital careers in the healthcare profession.”

The federal funding allocated to Valparaiso University will go towards updating the Simulation and Experiential Learning Centers — key tools for giving students the virtual experiences needed to hone their skills before working with real patients. The center puts students through hands-on, simulated scenarios that require on-the-spot decision making and high-fidelity simulators capable of exhibiting a wide range of symptoms. In addition to technical skills, these scenarios require students to develop soft skills such as conversing with patients and listening to feedback.

President Padilla and Frank Mrvan

Other speakers at the event included Valparaiso University President José D. Padilla J.D., Gail Kost, MSN, RN, clinical associate professor and director of the virtual learning center, and students whose educations will be impacted by the funding.

“I want to thank Congressman Mrvan for being here, for being a leader on health care, and for being a leader in this region, period. This would not have happened if not for him.” President Padilla said. “The demand for health care has never been higher. We have to meet that need, and that’s what we’re trying to do at the College of Nursing and Health Professions.”

The $1 million allocated to Valparaiso University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions is part of more than $20.5 million going towards projects in Northwest Indiana. For more on the College of Nursing and Health Professions, please visit valpo.edu/conhp.
