Valparaiso University Theatre Presents: “She Kills Monsters”

Join the Valparaiso University Theatre department on a journey to explore family, fantasy, and the challenges of growing up as an outsider with a production of “She Kills Monsters” at the University Theatre Nov. 2-3 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 4-5 at 2 p.m. This unique production promises sword fighting, monsters, dancing, comedy, and drama.

“This play tackles bullying, crushes, and being in the closet in high school, and I think a lot of students from a range of backgrounds will be able to relate to that experience of being an outsider,” says George Potter, Ph.D., associate professor of English.

The play centers on Agnes Evans, a young woman who loses her family in a tragic car crash. Trying to connect with her sister Tilly’s memory, Agnes and her friends play through Tilly’s final Dungeons and Dragons campaign module. The play takes place both in the real world and in the imaginary fantasy world as Agnes discovers more about her sister’s life and struggles than she had ever known while she was alive.

“She Kills Monsters” was created by Vietnamese playwright Qui Nguyen. This cultural background will play a role in encouraging cooperation between classes and groups on campus, including the Tabletop RPG Club and courses in Asian American literature and roleplaying game writing.
