Douglas Cole: “Standing on the Water”

STANDING ON THE WATER

And so the night comes in and makes its claim,
a plane in flight with last light of day on its wings,
a dog asleep with muddy paws twitching in a hunt dream.
Reading the book in the darkening room, the old one
slips into sleep, the world is gone, complete,
nothing but a frequency not even a dog could hear.

Douglas Cole has published six collections of poetry, a novella, and The White Field, a novel. His work has appeared in several anthologies as well as Chicago Quarterly Review, Galway Review, Bitter Oleander, Louisiana Literature, and Slipstream. He lives and teaches in Seattle.
