Conversations Project to discuss diversity, prejudice in America
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Valparaiso University’s Conversations Project will host an April 3 discussion on diversity and prejudice in American society.
“Forty Years Gone: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Many Guises of Prejudice” will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Christopher Center Community Room and is free and open to the public. Panelists will start a conversation exploring the history, social dynamics and impacts of both diversity and prejudice on American society. Audience members are encouraged to attend and share their own knowledge and experiences concerning prejudice and its effects.
Panelists for the final Conversation Project discussion of the year are Dr. Larry Baas, a professor of political science who teaches courses in constitutional law and political behavior and director of Valparaiso’s Community Research and Service Center; Dr. Angela Jackson, an assistant professor of psychology whose research interests include racial identity development models and multicultural education; Dr. Gregory Jones, an adjunct assistant professor of theology and pastor of Union Community Church in Valparaiso who has courses on the Christian response to social victims and the black church; and Dr. Lissa Yogan, an assistant professor of sociology and criminology whose scholarly interests include looking at how race and gender have shaped human interactions.
The goals of the Conversations Project are to promote mutual education, understanding and political reconciliation through dialog, and to forge connection between the University and Northwest Indiana community. The program is supported by the Valparaiso Project on Civic Reflection.
