For Current Students

The MSEED program has the following expectations for students to remain in good standing in the program:
  • Maintain a double major in math/science and secondary education
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA in your math/science major of 2.0 or higher
  • Earn a C+ or higher in all education courses
  • Must pass Education Checkpoint 1 and Checkpoint 2 at the appropriate times (see catalog for details)
  • Complete the three experiences (summer research internship, curriculum development internship, and cultural diversity experience) in a timely fashion, along with the associated required final products for each experience
  • Be active in the MSEED community, at a minimum attending the monthly required MSEED dinner
Students who do not meet the expectations for good standing will be put on MSEED probation, with an action plan to help recover to a successful track.
Students will fill out an MSEED Progress Report each semester to ensure that they are meeting all expectations.

The MSEED program includes three funded experiences:

Details:
  • Recommended for summer following sophomore year
  • Stipend of $3000 (for 300 hours) and free campus housing
  • Topic must be related to your math or science major
  • You cannot be concurrently enrolled in any summer courses. Any other part-time work will need to be
    approved by the MSEED Leadership Team.
Required Final Products:
  • Must present research (either poster or slides) at an appropriate professional venue, such as the Summer Celebration of Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Must complete a reflection essay (2–3 pages) about your summer research experience, in particular addressing the following questions: What did I learn about myself and research? How has this experience enriched my understanding of my content area? How can I apply this understanding to my future teaching?

  • Recommended for summer following junior year (must have completed ED 357)
  • Stipend of $10 per hour for 120 to 167 hours and free campus housing
  • Can be conducted under the mentorship of either a Valpo faculty member, high school teacher, or representative of a STEM organization, such as The Museum of Science and Industry
  • You cannot be concurrently enrolled in any summer courses. Any other part-time work will need to be
    approved by the MSEED Leadership Team.
Required Final Products:
  • Must develop curriculum (units, lessons plans, class activities, etc) for a university instructor, high school teacher, or STEM organization

Details:
  • Can take place any time during spring break or summer break
  • Must spend a minimum of one week immersed in another culture, different from your surroundings growing up.  You should be actively involved in some aspect of their culture.  Sightseeing tours do not count.
  • Reimbursement of up to $1500 towards travel expenses
