The Journey

Embark on a path that will change your life.

Through this rigorous program, students earn a bachelor of science in science or mathematics and also earn a teaching license— all in four years.

As a student in the MSEED program, you’ll gain hands-on experience year-round in the classroom and through a paid internship.

As a freshman, you study the subject you love to build a foundation of knowledge.

  • Begin coursework in your math or science major
  • Attend the weekly MSEED freshmen colloquium
  • Attend the weekly MSEED dinner to foster community support and fellowship
  • Work closely with your education adviser and math/science adviser
  • Embark upon a paid diversity immersion experience over spring break or the summer to work with people from other cultures (may be completed during sophomore or junior year as well)

As a sophomore, you begin your education coursework and continue in your math or science discipline.

  • Begin education coursework
  • Continue into intermediate math or science major coursework
  • Attend the weekly MSEED dinner to foster community support and fellowship
  • Work closely with your education adviser and math/science adviser
  • Embark upon a paid diversity immersion experience over spring break or the summer to work with people from other cultures (may be completed during freshman or junior year as well)

As a junior, you progress into more sophisticated coursework in both education and science/mathematics.

  • Continue coursework in education and in your math or science major
  • Attend the weekly MSEED dinner to foster community support and fellowship
  • Work closely with your education adviser and math/science adviser
  • Embark upon a paid diversity immersion experience over spring break or the summer to work with people from other cultures (may be completed during freshman or sophomore year as well)

As a senior, you prepare for your semester of student teaching and for life as a professional educator.

  • Advanced education and math/science coursework
  • Attend the weekly MSEED dinner to foster community support and fellowship
  • Work closely with your education adviser and math/science adviser
  • Complete your student teaching (spring semester)
  • Career placement

Each year, the MSEED program builds your knowledge and your practical skill, so you graduate with the confidence to be an exceptional teacher. After four years, you:

  • Graduate with a bachelor of science degree and a teaching certification
  • Receive ongoing support from Valpo mentors and alumni
  • Influence the next generation of scientists and mathematicians

“I was hooked on MSEED — what it stands for, what it could do for me, how it will help bridge the gap between STEM and education — most of all how it would allow me to help high school students in math and science.”
