End of Year — Faculty

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” — Coretta Scott King

Dear Colleagues,

As the academic year draws to a close, it is important to set aside time to reflect upon what we have accomplished. While we certainly faced challenges this year, this community of learning also continues to accomplish much together in our collective search for knowledge and truth. I am grateful for all you do to support the mission of Valparaiso University and for all the ways in which you contribute to making this such a special experience for our students.

There are many reasons to be filled with gratitude as we conclude this year. Reflecting over the past 10 months, we can see the 2018–2019 academic year was marked by many accomplishments. This year we celebrated milestones with the 50th anniversaries of Study Abroad at Valpo and of the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Several faculty and staff members earned recognition for excellence and received grants to advance their fields. We dedicated the Physician Assistant Building and the Kempf Court at Hilltop Gym. Our athletics and arts programs continued to delight fans and audiences. And we launched new academic programs in environmental engineering, engineering PLUS, interdisciplinary business and engineering, music therapy, and occupational therapy.

The achievements of this community are far too numerous to detail here, but I encourage you to read a few more highlights HERE [link to year in review release on valpo.edu news site].

We are indeed blessed to pursue our vocations in this community. As Coretta Scott King reminds us, it is truly the actions of the members of this community that constitute its greatness. The work you do, each and every day, helps this University prepare women and men for lives of leadership, service, and generosity. It is noble work.

Whether you are spending your summer on campus or away from Valpo, I hope these months offer an opportunity to spend time with family and loved ones and to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate.

Sincerely,

Mark A. Heckler, Ph.D.
President
