Dining Services Employment Calendar

The Harre Union operates seven days a week during the school year, serving cafeteria meals in Founders; deli and snacks in the Campus Cafe; and catered meals in the Harre Union and other locations on campus.

Employees are also scheduled to work at some catered events throughout the year. Schedules are posted each Wednesday for the following week and include some evening and weekend shifts.

During the summer, employees have choices for employment. Dining Services operates the kitchen to serve summer conference groups. Employees may be assigned to work in the kitchen; or they may request an assignment with Facilities Management (painting or grounds maintenance); or they may request a leave of absence for most of the summer.

Work is sometimes available with Dining Services during Christmas recess and spring break.  Vacation may also be taken when Dining Services employment is not available.

Employment Classifications

Full Time
Scheduled up to 40 hours per week – averaging approximately 36 hours.
Paid leave time benefits (vacation, sick time, personal time, holiday) with medical insurance available on a co-pay basis.

Part Time
Scheduled up to 29 hours per week – averaging approximately 26 hours.
Pro-rated leave time benefits paid (vacation, sick time, personal time, holiday).

Part Time Substitute
Scheduled less than 20 hours per week (no benefits available).

Benefits

Flexible Schedule
At Valpo, part-time employees are scheduled less than 30 hours per week (usually 28 or 29 hours) during the academic year. Full-time employees may take part in the University medical benefit program. All employees qualify for prorated vacation, sick days and personal days, based on hours worked.

Tuition Remission
The University offers tuition remission for qualified employees, dependents and spouses. It is important to discuss specific details of this benefit with the Human Resource staff to gain a full understanding of the program.

IMPORTANT STUDENT TAX INFORMATION

Before you can begin working, you must complete the required tax paperwork.  International students will need to fill out additional paperwork in the International Programs office.  Non-students should do so during normal business hours at Human Resources in Kretzmann Hall.

REQUIRED IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS:

Proper identification as listed on the attached “List of Acceptable Identification Documents” must be provided.  Please note that you need either a document from “list A” OR one document from “list B” plus one document from “list C”.

NOTE:  Original Social Security cards & birth certificates are required.

PROOF OF BANKING:

Valparaiso University payroll uses direct deposit.  Therefore, you must provide banking information.  You may bring a check OR an official document from your bank that states your name, account number and the bank routing number.  NOTE: A deposit slip is not acceptable.

Core Kitchen Student Positions

Salad Assistant – Help salad production staff with cutting and cleaning raw vegetables/fruits and assisting salad staff as instructed (cross trained with deli).

Deli Help – Replenish Founders Table/Cafe deli station, stock sandwiches, hummus, cheese & crackers along with other Grab & Go type products.

Baker Assistant – Assist in the production of high-quality baked goods from mixes and from-scratch recipes.

Dishwasher Help – Operate dishroom equipment, while following strict sanitation guidelines, cross-train to assist storeroom and janitors as needed.

Storeroom/Stocker Assistant – Function as an attendant stocker keeping all shelves filled for customers, assist with cleaning and restocking pots and pans if needed during the shift.

Janitor Assistant – Remove trash and assist in maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility, assist with cleaning and restocking pots and pans during shift.

Catering Department Student Positions

Waitstaff – Help catering assistants in the set-up, service, clean-up, and transport needed for events.

Grinders Student Positions

Baristas/Cashiers – Set-up, prepare all menu items to order, maintain area and close down at end of shift, operate cash register accurately and quickly, and is pleasant and personable.

Founders Table/Café Student Positions

Cook’s Help/Prep (Founders Table) – Support Line Cooks, work with bulk hot production, cold food prep, and simple line cooking.

Servers (Founders Table) – Portion and compose plates to hand to customers, possess excellent communication and customer service skills, comfortable handling food, perform basic cooking functions, clean and restock, must be cross trained to cashier and work in dining room as needed.

Pizza Hearth Oven Operator (Founders Table) – Oven operation techniques are relatively simple but timing and coordination during cooking is complicated and requires a special “touch”,  strong line cook experience would be a good background for this position.

Specials Station & Grill – Line Runner (Founders Table) – Assist line cooks and prep for area, high energy and able to work under pressure.

Cook’s Help/Prep (Founders Table) – Support Line Cooks basic food preparation skills (i.e. making wraps) and maintain salad/deli/soup area, prepare specialty sandwich to order.  Interacts well with clientele and is enthusiastic.

Attendant/Stocker (Founders Table & Café) – Stock the Grab-n-Go areas and maintain cleanliness and order of dining room.  Friendly and customer oriented.

Cashier (Founders Table & Café) – Accurate, quick, pleasant, and personable, assist with dining room and serving area cleanliness, help to restock as needed.

Barista/Freshens™ (Café) – Prepare all menu items to order, maintain areas’ cleanliness and keep product items stocked, following strict sanitation guidelines.  Operate cash register accurately and quickly, while being pleasant and personable.

Student Manager – Oversee student employees, handle student call-offs, assist manager(s) on duty.
