A Beacon’s Reflection | Matthew Robinson ’26 MBA, RN

My journey to Valparaiso University has been shaped by service, leadership, and a desire to make a lasting impact within healthcare. I began my academic path at Western Michigan University, where I majored in nursing and participated in ROTC [Reserve Officers’ Training Corps]. Upon graduation, after passing the NCLEX [National Council Licensure Exam], I commissioned as an active-duty Army officer in the Nurse Corps. My first assignment was as a medical-surgical nurse in El Paso, Texas. Later, I transitioned into an instructor role, teaching both didactic and clinical courses to newly enlisted soldiers training to become nurses. It was in these roles that I discovered my passion for leadership and management.

When I completed my military service, I knew I wanted to continue developing as a leader, but I also recognized that hospitals, at their core, are a complex business. To truly influence change and lead at the highest levels, I needed to strengthen my business resume. That realization led me to pursue an MBA [master of business administration].

After leaving the Army, I worked as a travel nurse, gaining exposure to hospitals across the country. Each assignment gave me a broader perspective on healthcare systems, patient care models, and leadership styles. At the same time, the constant moving made it clear that I needed a graduate program that could travel with me. That is what drew me to Valparaiso University, not only because of its strong reputation and accreditation, but also because of its identity as a private university with Christian values. I wanted a program that would challenge me academically while also aligning with my values, and the flexibility of the online, asynchronous format made it possible to pursue my MBA while living and working in different parts of the country.

Valpo also carried a personal connection for me because my father-in-law is an alumnus and spoke with great pride about his experience here. His stories, combined with the program’s reputation, gave me confidence that Valpo would be the right place to continue my education. Eventually, I settled in the rural suburbs of Indianapolis with my wife, who was pregnant at the time. We had our first baby seven months ago! I accepted a management position on a post-surgical unit at IU Health North. Even while still a student, I found that the knowledge and skills I was gaining through Valpo’s MBA program gave me an edge in applying for leadership roles. Courses in finance, accounting, and strategic thinking and action have been directly applicable to my day-to-day responsibilities, helping me make more informed decisions and lead my team with confidence.

One of the highlights of my Valpo experience has been the support and guidance I have received from faculty and staff. In particular, Deb Singer who is the assistant dean and MBA advisor, has been helpful with navigating my MBA timeline and ensuring I stay on track toward my goals. That kind of personal investment in students is what sets Valpo apart as it is not just about coursework, but about building relationships and fostering growth.

Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to become a chief nurse executive within a hospital organization. I want to combine my clinical background, military leadership experience, and Valpo’s MBA to shape healthcare systems that are both patient-centered and operationally sound. Valpo is giving me the tools, confidence, and vision to pursue that path!
