Benefits of Student Employment
Many of our students find employment on and off campus. Work study an opportunity for students to earn wages through campus employment. Work study is not a grant, but are wages paid directly to the student through direct deposit into their banking account for the hours they work each week. Students work an average of 10-12 hours per week. More than 1200 Valpo students (over 35%) help finance their education through campus employment.
Student jobs offer early career experience that can be included on a resume. Roles on or off campus demonstrate initiative, reliability, and relevant job skills that employers look for after graduation.
Earning a paycheck helps students cover everyday costs, from textbooks to personal expenses and tuition. It reduces the need for family support or borrowing, making college more affordable.
Employment introduces students to workplace expectations such as punctuality, responsibility, and teamwork. These early habits contribute to a strong work ethic that carries into future employment.
Earning income while studying can lessen reliance on student loans. Even part-time work contributes meaningfully to tuition or living costs, helping students graduate with less debt.
Student workers often form relationships with supervisors and colleagues who can offer mentoring, references, or job leads. These early connections are valuable for internships and career launches.
