Kudakwashe Chikonyora’s ’25 faith has been a cornerstone of his life – especially in moments of hardship. He says, “When I lost my mother at the age of 13, it was my faith that gave me strength and the resilience to continue moving forward. That experience taught me the power of community and instilled a deep sense of responsibility to support others. Whether mentoring freshmen, serving as a Resident Assistant [(RA)], or engaging in leadership roles, my faith motivates me to lead with compassion, humility, and a spirit of service. It has guided me to build inclusive, supportive communities wherever I am, reinforcing my commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of those around me.” He continues, “Faith reminds me that my purpose goes beyond personal achievements; it’s about contributing to the greater good. In moments of pressure or when things feel overwhelming, I turn to prayer and reflection, which gives me clarity and a sense of peace. My belief in Ubuntu—the idea that ‘I am because we are’—is a key principle in my life and leadership. Whether I’m working as Vice President of the International Students Association or managing my responsibilities as a Resident Assistant, my faith keeps me focused on service and the well-being of others. It provides a moral compass, ensuring I stay true to my values of kindness, inclusivity, and selflessness.”
Kudakwashe says choosing Valpo was important because he wanted a place to grow academically and spiritually. He says, “I chose to attend a faith-based university because I wanted an environment that nurtures academic excellence and spiritual growth. Valparaiso University stood out to me as a place where faith is woven into the fabric of campus life. The sense of community and support I’ve experienced here has been invaluable, especially as an international student navigating a new culture. Valpo has allowed me to grow in my faith while pushing me to excel in my studies and embrace leadership opportunities. The faith-based environment here has made my university experience more meaningful, offering me a place to reflect, grow, and live out my values.”
Kudakwashe says he serves in the Chapel because it has become a place where he has found belonging and purpose. “Serving in the Chapel has been a profoundly fulfilling experience, giving me a space to put my faith into action. As the lead sacristan, I had the privilege of helping others in their spiritual journeys and contributing to the life of the Valpo community. The Chapel is not just a place of worship for me; it’s where I’ve found a sense of belonging and purpose.” He adds, “It’s been rewarding to be part of something that impacts others spiritually, whether through organizing services or simply being there for someone in need of comfort. Serving in the Chapel has reinforced my belief in the importance of giving back and supporting others in their faith journeys.”
Valpo’s Lutheran traditions have helped Kudakwashe adjust to a new culture and college life all at the same time. He says, “Valpo’s Lutheran heritage has provided a foundation of service, inclusion, and justice that aligns closely with my values. One of the most impactful moments during my time here was when my Residential Learning Coordinator, Ayla Hughes, invited me and other international students to her home for Thanksgiving. This gesture made me feel welcomed and cared for as someone far from my family. That experience exemplifies the hospitality and compassion rooted in Valpo’s Lutheran tradition. These values have shaped my leadership roles and encouraged me to prioritize inclusivity, whether through organizing cultural nights or mental health workshops in my residence hall. The Lutheran ethos of service and care for others has constantly influenced me during my time at Valpo.”
Kudakwashe says that the faith-based activities at Valpo are essential to the Valpo experience. “Faith-based activities are essential for fostering a strong sense of community and purpose at Valpo. They offer students a space to reflect on their beliefs, find support, and engage in meaningful conversations beyond academics. These activities create an environment where students can grow intellectually and spiritually.” He continues, “Faith-based activities have been a source of strength and renewal throughout my time here, helping me stay grounded and focused on my goals. Maintaining these activities ensures that future students have the same opportunities for spiritual growth and reflection that have been crucial to my journey.”
Looking towards life after Valpo, Kudakwashe says his faith drives his future aspirations. “My faith is central to my future aspirations. It drives me to pursue a career in actuarial science, focusing on making a positive impact, especially in communities often underserved.” He explains, “In everything I do, I strive to uphold the values of integrity, compassion, and service. I see my work as more than just a profession—it’s a way to contribute to the well-being of others. Whether through risk analysis or leadership roles, I want to ensure that my work has a meaningful, positive effect on the lives of those I serve. My long-term goal is to support other international students and underrepresented individuals in the actuarial profession, just as mentors have supported me.”
