Welcome

Wisdom is knowing the right path to take . . .
Integrity is taking it.

Good morning, Valpo!

Today we launch a new academic year and write the next chapter in the history of Valparaiso University.

The atmosphere on campus this morning is electric, and I hope you experience the sense of excitement and pleasure that comes with being part of our University community on this special day. I am delighted to welcome returning students, faculty, and staff back to campus. I hope the summer provided a time for renewal, reflection, and refreshment and that you are ready to start another extraordinary year. Welcome back!

To new students, faculty, and staff: welcome to your new home. Each member of the Valparaiso University community plays a vital role in creating and contributing to the common pursuit of truth that distinguishes this University. We’re thrilled to have you with us and look forward to the unique contributions that you will make to this very special place.

One of our cardinal values at Valpo is to live lives of excellence devoted to leadership and service. We aspire to be people of integrity. Leading and serving with honesty and integrity will bring you great satisfaction and recognition in your career and in your life.

This afternoon at Opening Convocation, the incoming class will process into the Chapel of the Resurrection, receive the Shield of Character, and sign the honor code: I have neither given or received, nor have I tolerated others’ use of unauthorized aid. The honor code is a pledge that epitomizes living a life of integrity as members of the Valpo community. We hold ourselves and each other to a higher standard — one of honor, truth, and authenticity.

As the fall semester gains momentum, we soon will be busy with a cavalcade of assignments, meetings, and events. In the midst of your busy schedules, I hope you will take time for quiet reflection, whether at 10 a.m. Morning Prayer in the Chapel of the Resurrection or during a break in between classes or meetings. Being still is powerful. When we allow peace to transform our day, we become more focused, fruitful, and fulfilled.
