Why Latin American/Latinx Studies at Valpo?

The Latin American/Latinx Studies program at Valparaiso University includes an in-depth study of the language, culture, and history of Latin American nations as well as the Latinx population in the United States.

This minor allows students to study both the cultural and historic heritage, as well as contemporary concerns, of the peoples of Latin America and the U.S. Latinx population. In addition to Spanish language and cultural studies courses, further coursework in history and political science are conducted in English and provide a rich and comprehensive curriculum of Latin American and Latinx cultures.

About Our Latin American/Latinx Studies Minor

There are many majors that can be coupled with Latin American/Latinx Studies, such as its practical complements of social work, sociology, theology, political science, history, and education.

Students equipped with a Latin American/Latinx Studies minor will be prepared to study, travel, and work abroad or in locations with a high concentration of Latinx families. Latinos are the fastest growing population in the Midwest, and this complementary minor will make students more marketable and culturally educated employees after graduation.

The LALS interdisciplinary minor is designed for students in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and professional programs who are considering careers in international business, nonprofit agencies, or government, in the United States or abroad, as well as students who foresee working with the increasing Latinx population in the United States, particularly in education, ministry, nursing, or other professional or service careers. Students with a Latin American/Latinx Studies (LALS) Minor will study the language, histories, politics, cultures, and societies of Latin America and the Latinx communities in the United States.
